Reasons God Left Enemies
in the Land
1. Because the Israelites made covenants
with the evil inhabitants of the land and did
not tear down their altars (Jud. 2:2,3)
2. Because God wanted to test the Israelites
to see if they would obey Him (Jud. 2:22)
3. Because God wanted to teach the
generation of the Israelites who had not
known war (Jud. 3:1,2)

Book of Ruth
Spiritual Purpose
In this time of apostasy, warfare, decline,
violence, moral decay and anarchy, the
book of Ruth provides—
 A picture of the other side of the story—
the godly remnant who remain true to
the laws of God;
 The continuation of God’s protection of
the Seed line of Jesus Christ.
38
Line of Christ

 Obed the father of Jesse,
 and Jesse the father of King David …

43
History of Moab
 The people of Moab were descendants of Lot,
Abraham’s nephew, who had to flee Sodom
when God rained down fire upon it.
(Around 1868 B.C.)
 The mother of the Moabites was Lot’s elder
daughter. (Gen. 19:30-38)
 Moabites worshiped Chemosh and other
pagan gods.
44
History of Israel and Moab
 Around 1423 B.C., the Moabite king, Balak,
tried to hire a magician named Balaam to
curse Israel before they entered the
promised land. (Num. 22-24)
 Instead, God caused Balaam to bless Israel
 But Balaam also and urged Balak to send
beautiful Moabite women into the Jewish
camp to seduce the men.
 This caused sin and idolatry, and it was
punished. (Num. 25)
45
History of Israel and Moab
 The book of Ruth took place about 200 years
after the war Ehud the lefty led against Moab
(Jud. 3:12-30)
 This time was also about 80 years before
other wars with Moab when Israel was under
Saul (1 Sam. 14:47)
46
Outline of Ruth

confession of faith (1:1-18 – 10 years)

(1:19-2:23 – months)

Outline of Ruth
 Ruth’s love rewarded

(3:1-18 – one day)
 Ruth’s reward of redemption by Boaz

48
Ruth’s Statement of Conversion
“And Ruth said,
Entreat me not to
leave thee, or to
return from
following after thee:
for whither thou
goest, I will go; and
where thou lodgest,
I will lodge: thy
people shall be my
people, and thy
God my God”
(1:16)
49
Law of the kinsman redeemer
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die,
and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not
marry without unto a stranger: her husband's
brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him
to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's
brother unto her. It shall be that the firstborn
whom she bears shall assume the name of his
dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted
out from Israel.
(Deuteronomy 25:5,6)
50
Law of the kinsman redeemer
But if the man does not desire to take his
brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up
to the gate to the elders and say, “My husband's
brother refuses to establish a name for his
brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the
duty of a husband's brother to me.” Then the
elders of his city shall summon him and speak to
him.
(Deuteronomy 25:7,8)
51
Law of the kinsman redeemer
And if he persists and says, “I do not desire to
take her,” then shall his brother's wife come unto
him in the presence of the elders, and loose his
shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and
shall answer and say, “So shall it be done unto
that man that will not build up his brother's
house.” In Israel his name shall be called, 'The
house of him whose sandal is removed.’
(Deuteronomy 25:8-10)
52
Kinsman-Redeemer
A Shadow of Christ
 Must be related by blood to those he redeems
(Dt. 25:5-10; Jn. 1:14; Rom. 1:3; Phil. 2:5-8; Heb. 2:14,15)
 Must be able to pay the price of redemption
(Ruth 2:1; I Pet.1:18,19)
 Must be willing to redeem
(Ruth 3:11; Mt.20:28; John 10:15, 18; Heb.10:7)
 Must be free himself
(I Pet.2:21-25)
53
God’s law to Care for the poor
Do not go over your
vineyard a second time
or pick up the grapes
that have fallen. Leave
them for the poor and
the alien. I am the
LORD your God.
(Lev.19:10)
54
Why did God kill Naomi’s two sons?
 Nobody knows for sure
 But they did marry unbelievers
(assuming that Ruth and Orpah did not believe
in the God of Israel before their marriages to
Mahlon and Kilion)
 A believer marrying an unbeliever is a sin that
gets God angry – even today
55
The sin of marrying
unbelievers
(Deuteronomy 7:1-6)
When the LORD your God brings you into the
land which you go to possess, and has cast out
many nations before you … you shall conquer
them and utterly destroy them. You shall make
no covenant with them nor show mercy to
them. Nor shall you make marriages with them.
You shall not give your daughter to their son,
nor take their daughter for your son.
56
The sin of marrying
unbelievers
(Deuteronomy 7:1-6)
For they will turn your sons away from
following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger
of the LORD will be aroused against you and
destroy you suddenly ... For you are a holy
people to the LORD your God; the LORD your
God has chosen you to be a people for Himself,
a special treasure above all the peoples on the
face of the earth.
57
Application
 Be upset about sin in society, b/c God is upset
 God is not mocked – a man reaps what he
sows (Gal. 6:7) – probably in this life and
for sure in the next life
 Don’t think that your obedience and sin are
private and don’t affect others; they do
 Do not marry an unbeliever,
or else you will get God angry at you
58
Application
 Serve the poor like Boaz did
 Serve the the elderly like Ruth did
 Follow proper procedures like Boaz did
 Be a friend to all who fear God (Ps. 119:63)
