THE CONCLUSION
• Eat and drink whatever you like…
• It is speaking English that will kill you!
THE RESEARCH FORMULA
• Best Practices
• Danielson Teacher Framework
• SIOP
• RTI
• PBIS
• Data Teams
• PLCs
• ETC…ETC…ETC…
• Someone is profiting off each one!
•If it is formulaic someone would have
automated it and we wouldn’t need
you!
•There is no substitute for a great
teacher!
I AM NOT A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
• I am a dreamer
• I am a worker
• I am a coach
• I am an alchemist
• What are you?
THE PROBLEM
• Public education started in 1918 as an economic trade-off
• Trade short term profits (child labor) for long term productivity (compliance)
• Tradable jobs – doing things that could be done elsewhere
• Only 600,000 added in the past 20 years
• The New York fast food workers
WHAT SHOULD A SCHOOL BE?
• Mechanism for opportunity
• Tool for empowerment
• Safe, healthy and happy place
• All children deserve this
• Place of learning, not a place of doing
• A place that children want to be a part of
THE SECRET FORMULA FOR A GOLDEN SCHOOL
DON’T TELL ANYONE!
• Create a culture the attracts and retains the most talented teachers
• Foster a culture of ownership, freedom and accountability
• Focus on growth: everyday for every student
• Relentlessly transfer our passion to our students
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
• Build Culture
• Win Engagement
• Achievement will follow
• Achievement leads to freedom
IT IS TIME TO LIBERATE OUR SCHOOLS!
CULTURE
• How would kids feel if they were welcomed by an adult and greeted by smiles from
every person every day?
• Maslow’s Hierarchy
• Social/emotional empathy
• Building norms and rules designed to promote learning and imagination
• Expectations that are explicitly taught and modeled
• Character development for students
• Discipline structures based on learning and social justice
• Equity not equality
• Remember we are here for children and adults are compensated to be
inconvenienced!
ENGAGEMENT
• Are our kids ready to learn before we ask them to?
• How do we respond when students ask to learn?
• Do we teach children or curriculum?
• What would happen if we switched from an expectation of doing to an
expectation of learning?
• Are our buildings set up for the learning of kids or the convenience of adults?
• Is there a constant connection being built between what we are asking
students to do and an obvious piece of their own present or future?
RETHINKING TEACHING AND LEARNING
• Precise, focused instruction
• Point of greatest impact
• Cooperation instead of compliance
• Mass customization
• Homework as practice rather than assessment
• Flipping the classroom
• Mastery of skills rather than the collection of points
• Real-world applications
• Think about what you do and if it truly impacts learning
HERE IS WHERE WE START
• Primed for change
• Surrounded by talented people
• It is not about what you have done, but about what you will do
