Historical Background
 Raphael was seen as being the artist who
attained the highest degree of artistic
perfection.
 Students drew from Raphael’s examples,
rather than from nature itself.
 Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in
1848 and was disbanded in 1853 (it was a
secret society).
Pre-Raphaelite Characteristics
 Recover the medieval simplicity lost during
the High Renaissance.
 Tension between form and moral content.
 Everything in the painting is “seen too clearly.”
 Vibrant colors.
 Favorite themes --> Arthurian Legend, Hamlet,
the Lady of Shallot, Classical Myths, Ancient
History.
 Stunning, beautiful women.
