Our Region: ABRUZZO
Our region is called “Abruzzo” and it is
situated in the centre of Italy. It has got
four major cities: L’Aquila, Chieti,
Pescara and Teramo. It can boast
wonderful beaches and mountains.

Abruzzo regional songs
• The musical tradition of Abruzzo is very rich and
varied, and its long history has been influenced mainly
by the folk cultures of southern Italy and the
Mediterranean area.
• Beyond the "saltarella" and the "stornelli", which are
the most popular forms of expression, there are
children's songs, lullabies, nursery rhymes, serenades as
the many celebrated "partenze" (= departures of the
bride).
• There are the songs or lyrical love, tunes sung during
the olive and grape harvest there are the ballads and
songs of prayer…..

Province of Teramo, over
the territory of the two
municipalities:
Castellalto and Canzano.
The geographical position
is wonderful: 20 kilometres
away from the sea and 30
kilometres away from the
mountains.

The number of teaching hours per subject and the
curricula are defined by ministerial decree in the whole
country.
AUTONOMY (from 1997)
Autonomy is granted to all
schools as concerns teaching,
organization,
research,
experimentation
and
development.
Every educational institution,
following the National
Indications, has its own
Educational Curriculum Plan,
which represents the educational
action plan, where each school
can include a series of “projects”
related to the subjects, so there
are projects about environment,
road safety, sport, music, chess,
music, theatre, foreign languages,
creative writing.

• NURSERY SCHOOL (OR KINDERGARTEN) 3-6 AGED
PUPILS ( NOT COMPULSORY)3 YEARS
• PRIMARY SCHOOL: 6-11 AGED PUPILS
(COMPULSORY) 5 YEARS
• 1° Level SECONDARY SCHOOL : 11-14 AGED PUPILS

LENGHT OF SCHOOL
DAY/WEEK/YEAR
School must be open for 200 days a year.
The school year generally runs from mid September to early
June.
Schools normally operate for six days a week (Monday to
Saturday), from about 08.30 a.m. to 01.30 p.m. A minority of
schools is open from Monday to Friday and there are also
some schools working in the afternoon.
There are three months of holidays in summer, two weeks
for Christmas festivities and one week at Easter.
NURSERY (SCHOOL )
Usually 40hours a week (morning and afternoon, with
municipalities managing transportation and school meals)
Schooling is free.
The aim of this first stage of the educational system
is:
•to educate and develop fine motor skills, thinking;
•moral- religious-social development of children;
• to promote
social interactions, independence,
creativity:
•to assure an effective and equal educational
opportunity.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
Two different types of organization
•27 hours per week (from Monday to Saturday 8:00 to 12:30 a.m)
•40 hours per week Full Time( from Monday to Friday 8:00 to
16:00p.m with school dinners in the school canteen.
Textbooks are free
Class size: from 12 to 25/28
Subjects: the National Curriculum includes Italian,
English, Geography, History, Math, Science,
Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education,
Information Technology and Religious Education
(not compulsory).
Special teachers for children with Special needs.
1°Level SECONDARY SCHOOL
(usually 30 hours per week, raising up to 40 after families’ request)
Schooling is compulsory, textbooks must be purchased
by families
Class size: from 10 to 28-30
Subjects: Italian, English, a second foreign language,
History, Geography, Science, Math, Technology,
Information Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education
and Religious Education.
Teachers: a teacher for each subject. Special teachers for
students with special needs.
Final exam (Esame di Licenza Media) held by class
teachers and an external president.
