   Tobacco has been an important crop since the 1600’s, especially in southern Maryland Around 1900, cooperative research on tobacco began with USDA at the Marlboro Fair Grounds Tobacco was among the first crops studied by the College of Agriculture Equal access programs UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

  In 1947, the University purchased the 202 acre Tobacco Research Farm from Percival Burroughs for $47,000 Operations were moved to the farm from the Fair Grounds Equal access programs UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
