Wise words….
“Teach me my most difficult concepts in my preferred
style.
Let me explore my easiest concepts in a different style.
Just don’t teach me all the time in your preferred style,
and think I’m not capable of learning.”

CME
Past requirements
for
Limitations of….no
requirement to
 Record of attendance
at meetings and
courses
 Any other work carried
out that had been
approved for CME
 think about what you
expected to learn from a
meeting
 reflect on what you have
learned
 demonstrate that you had
put into practice what you
had learned
 for any personal
development over the years
What is reflection?
• Looking at what we do and why
• Considering what happened in more detail
• Looking back on experiences
- attending to feelings
- recognising values, beliefs, motivation
• Examining more complex events
What is the role of reflection?
• Deepen our learning
• Relate our previous experiences to something
new
• Generate knowledge from unstructured
situations

‘In discussing your supporting information,
your appraiser will be interested in what
you did with the information and your
reflections on that information , not simply
that you collected it and maintained it in a
portfolio.’
Your appraiser will want to know:Theme: What you think the supporting
information says about your practice.
Utility: How you intend to develop or modify
your practice as a result of that reflection.
Impact: Any changes made to your work as a
result.
Types of reflective writing
• Descriptive writing (not reflective)
- reports events
• Descriptive reflection
- give reasons based on personal evaluation or
judgement
• Critical reflection
- takes broader context into account
Critical reflection
‘I went to a grand round today when a patient
who received a massive transfusion after an
obstetric complication was presented.
This was extremely relevant to me because of
the recent guidelines issued in our Trust for
dealing with patients requiring massive
transfusion.
I will need to review our local protocols and
training in the light of these new guidelines…’
Let’s do some writing
• Write a short sentence or two about an
experience you had at work in the last week.
• Rewrite the sentence using descriptive reflection
(give reasons based on personal evaluation or
judgement)
• Add critical reflection which takes the broader
context of your work into account
In summary……..
• Write in the first
person
• Include thoughts
and feelings
• Consider perspective of
others involved
• Connect with relevant theory
• Show what you have learned
• Step back, explore • Show what you are going to
and analyse your
own role
do
• Go back to it later
Why could this be difficult for me?
• I’ve got awful handwriting
• A blank page frightens me
• I don’t like writing as an activity
• I can’t think of what to write
• English is not my first language
• I am dyslexic
• Habits
What can I do……….
• Practice freewriting
- lots of good websites / books
• Start a diary, use ‘post it’ notes
• Use a word processor
• Different techniques
- mind mapping (Tony Buzan)
- drawing diagrams/maps
