Classes VA, VB, VC Primary School - Pizzighettone
School Year 2012-13
Boggel and the dragon Tarantasio, after exploring the river
Adda and have made friends with fish and birds, go back to the
embankment near PORTA SOCCORSO.
When he sees this ancient port, our friend thinks that maybe in
Pizzighettone there are other ancient monuments to be
discovered.
He asks the dragon Tarantasio who replies it’s true but he adds
that to deserve the tour of Pizzighettone, Boggel must discover
the most important places through a treasure hunt.
At these words, Boggel says:
“I am amazed! This treasure hunt will be really funny! Come on,
I can’t wait, when do we start?”
Tarantasio replies:
“You have wandered up and down the river for a long time!
First, would you like to have a little rest? Look! Near here we
can find the POLVERIERA SAN GIULIANO. It’s a sheltered and
warm building where weapons and gunpowder were stored once.
But don’t worry! Today there is nothing left inside! We are safe!”
Boggel and Tarantasio enter the dark room and fall asleep!
They are very tired after the long and wet trip in River Adda. Later
Boggel wakes up with a little temperature and Tarantasio hasn’t got
any medicine for him. He prepares a fire in the fireplace to warm his
friend and suddenly he sees a small wrapped parchment on the floor.
Tarantasio opens it and reads these words:
IF YOU WANT YOUR TEMPERATURE AWAY
YOU HAVE ALWAYS TO GO STRAIGHT
They walk a few steps to the south-east and they arrive in the place
that once was the CONVENTO SAN GIULIANO where pious nuns
cared for and helped the sick and wounded people who came through
Porta Soccorso.
Tarantasio leads Boggel in the place that today is CASA DI RIPOSO
“LUIGI MAZZA” where a nurse gives him a special medicine for his
temperature; he takes it with some warm milk and feels better
immediately!
He gets up from the bed where he has rested and finds another
parchment on a small table.
It says:
IF YOU WANT TO FIND THE TREASURE
TO NORTH-WEST YOU HAVE TO GO
TWO LIONS YOU WILL MEET
AND SOME MERLONS YOU WILL FIND
After these words Boggel and Tarantasio go to the north-west until
they meet two lions statues and a big tower right next.
Boggel says:
“Look Tarantasio! What a tower! Perhaps this is one of the places to
visit in Pizzighettone!
Tarantasio replies:
“Of course! This famous tower is called the TORRE DEL GUADO and
it’s all that remains of the ancient castle of Pizzighettone. Here
Francis I, the famous king of France, was imprisoned in 1525 after
being defeated by the Spanish king Charles V near Pavia. Come on,
let’s go in!”
They enter the room on the ground floor and Boggel is a bit
disappointed because it seems there is nothing interesting to see, but
Tarantasio leads him upstairs and … Wonder of wonders!! Boggel sees
an armour! Immediately he thinks it’s the one Francis I wore during
his battles!
He is terrified and exclaims:
“Tarantasio, Ta … Ta … Tarantasio, this is the king’s armour: surely
inside there will be the ghost of the king!!!”
Tarantasio laughs and reassures his friend:
“Be quiet, this is only a copy! Come on, let’s go near and watch it!
Boggel calms down a little and follows the dragon to the armour,
watch inside and … there isn’t a ghost but another parchment! It
says:
IN PIZZIGHETTONE THE KING WAS WELL RECEIVED
SO HE SENT SOME PRECIOUS GIFTS
ARE YOU CURIOUS? DO YOU WANT TO SEE THEM?
TO THE PARISH HOUSE YOU MUST GO!
Boggel says immediately:
“And why not? I would like to see these precious gifts! But what is
the Parish house?
His friend replies:
“It’s the house where the priest lives! It’s not far, let’s go now!”
The two friends run through Corso Vittorio Emanuele and at the
end of this street Boggel crosses the road on the left because he sees
an ice cream shop and he is ready to enjoy a fantastic ice cream!!
Tarantasio calls his greedy friend and says:
“There will be time for a delicious surprise! Come to the right,
under the arcades, that’s where the priest lives!
Boggel obeys and his friend rings the bell of the Parish House.
The priest opens the door, watch them a bit surprised and
they ask him kindly:
“We are two friends, a bit special: I am Tarantasio, the
famous dragon you certainly have heard and this is my
friend Boggel: he has come from far away to visit our town
and he would like to see the gifts the king Francis I sent to
the community of Pizzighettone a long time ago. Do you
want to show them, please?”
The priest welcomes them and show the precious gifts: a
CHASUBLE in velvet embroidered with gold lilies, symbols of
France, an ALTAR FRONTAL also rich in gold and silk, a
COAT which really belonged to the French king and an
important RELIQUARY containing a thorn from the crown
of Jesus Christ and a splinter of wood of his cross.
While the priest puts all the gifts in the closet, Tarantasio sees
something hidden in a corner: it’s a new parchment that says:
FROM THE PARISH HOUSE GO AWAY
ONLY FEW STEPS YOU HAVE TO DO
WALK AND COME OUT OF THE PORCH
AND YOU WILL SEE A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING!
The two friends come out of the porch and they see some columns
standing in front of the TOWN HALL.
Boggel watches them and suddenly exclaims:
“Look, Tarantasio, this column is different from the others!”
Tarantasio is surprised by his friend’s discovery and says:
“Of course my friend, all the columns are made in bricks but that
one is in stone and on its bottom there is a GRYPHON, the
symbol of Pizzighettone. It looks a bit like a monster because its
body is half bird and half lion!
While Boggel goes near the column to see the Gryphon, he realises
that it holds a new parchment in its claws!
IF A NEW MONUMENT YOU WANT TO SEE
TURN A LITTLE BIT AND YOU WILL FIND IT:
IT’S BIG AND SPECIAL BUT YOU CANNOT VISIT IT
Boggel turns right a little and he sees the beautiful facade of the
CHURCH OF SAN BASSIANO, the patron saint of Pizzighettone.
Tarantasio tells him that this church was built many centuries ago
by the people from the town of Lodi who came here to take refuge
during the wars.
Tarantasio explains:
“Look above the door… can you see the beautiful rose window? It’s
just like a fantastic piece of embroidery, isn’t it? Inside the church
there are some precious works of art but we can’t see them now
because the church is closed!”
Boggel, always curious, wants to know why they can’t visit it and
the dragon replies that in 2011 the apse in the church collapsed and
now it is going to be restored.
The two friends go to the north: Tarantasio looks after Boggel
because he knows his friend would like to run back to the ice
cream shop … and suddenly he sees some nice flowers in vases
among which he finds …. another parchment!
IF YOU WANT TO FIND A CLUE
TO NORTH-EAST YOU HAVE TO GO
YOU WILL FIND GREAT THINGS THERE
AND EVEN WALKING TRENCHES ON ANCIENT WALLS
More and more intrigued but now a little tired and very
hungry, Boggel asks Tarantasio to accompany him in this new
step and he stands surprised in front of the ANCIENT WALLS
OF PIZZIGHETTONE, the pride of the town!
The dragon guides his friend and says:
“Look Boggel, these walls were built in the 11th century to defend
Pizzighettone from the enemy’s attacks. Over the centuries they
have changed and they became more and more fortified to look
like as they appear today.”
“Look over there! Towards PORTA CREMONA. That is
RIVELLINO, a fortification to protect Porta Cremona and the
grass on the walls, which you can see below, is what remains of
a MOAT surrounding the town and you could cross it passing
two drawbridges. Follow me, I’ll show you everything!”
The interest and enthusiasm of our friend for the historical and
artistic town of Pizzighettone increases after every site he
visits but now he is also starving … but he follows Tarantasio.
Once at Rivellino they stop near the walls and suddenly they
see a goat bleating to call their attention and she gives them
another parchment.
ALWAYS GO TO THE SOUTH
AND FOLLOW MY WAY
DON’T LOSE THE PATH
IF YOU WANT TO DISCOVER THE TREASURE!
The two friends are surprised but they follow the goat which
leads them through a series of “casematte” located inside the
walls and used in the past as a store for weapons and as
accommodation for soldiers.
At the height of Casamatta 26, which is the largest, the goat tells
them to enter and …. Surprise!!!
They see a huge table in front of them with a lot of delicious
food! There are also a lot of children of the town throwing up
yellow, red, green, white and blue balloons… they are very
happy to see them and exclaim all together:
“Welcome finally! We have been waiting for a long time! We
are happy to meet Boggel and make friends with him!
Hooray!!!”
Even Tarantasio is astonished! Everybody sits around the
table, near the warmth of the fire in the fireplace.
They taste the typical food of Pizzighettone: salami and
parmesan cheese, black-eyed beans and ravioli with broth,
and “tripa de San Bassian”, the boiled capon with its stuffing
of meat, mustard, nougat and roasted chestnuts!
Better than ice cream!!! Boggel jumps on the food, tastes
everything and he’s very satisfied but in the end he says:
“Everything is so beautiful in Pizzighettone! But the most
precious thing is my friendship with all these kids! THIS IS
THE REAL TREASURE!!!
