Who are InterRISK?
 InterRISK was formed in 2004
 There are a number of branches nationwide with 2 in
Sydney
 A specialty schemes branch exists in Chatswood
 Formerly headed by Sean McDermott
 In house legal team & claims division
Who is Sean McDermott
 7 years Risk Management experience

 Specializes in a number of areas, particularly schemes
 Has an affinity for Aviation
 Worked for InterRISK over the last 2 years with the
number one priority being AMSA
Public Liability – What is it
The technical terming of the policy wording is:
 Subject to all provisions, terms, exclusions, conditions of
this Policy, the Insurer agrees to indemnify You for all
amounts which You shall become legally liable to pay as a
result of Claims or Legal Proceedings for Personal Injury or
Property Damage happening during the Period of Insurance
and caused by an Occurrence within the Territorial Limits
and arising from and within the course of the Business.
Public Liability – What is it
 Public liability is cover for loss, injury or damage to
third parties or their property
 AMSA has a $20,000,000 cover in place providing
protection to all participating men’s sheds nationwide
 Cover is Australia wide and covers the paid up
members & those that are attending out of
consideration of joining, standard practice has this
pegged at 3 visits
Public Liability - Examples
Men’s shed holds a BBQ, the BBQ falls over and injures
someone who is standing waiting for a sausage. This
person suffers burns and is subsequently taken to Hospital
requiring skin grafts. Unfortunately, the BBQ also fell on
their handbag which destroyed the iPhone and other
articles within.
 Losses incurred:
 Property Damage
 Injury
 Is this covered?
 Yes
Public Liability - Continued
 Another example:
 Jim is a member of XYZ, he is lathing and the chisel he is
holding gets caught and hits Bob’s bag causing damage
to Bob’s new iPhone 5S
 Losses Incurred
 Property Damage
 Is it covered
 The policy includes member to member cover, Yes.
Public Liability – I’m covered for
everything?
 Short answer is No
 The policy is designed to be very broad, however, there is a
difference between a fundraising BBQ and a major event
 Situations looked at closely relate to those where children
are involved
 Where the risk of loss is high
 The organisation of markets
 Group participation with the disabled or troubled youth
 Commercial activities – Some sheds are running
commercial operations operating for profit purposes.
Commercial activities are excluded by the policy
 If in doubt, call.
Auspicing – Are you really covered?
Auspicing Body
Generally speaking, the activities of the Men’s
Shed fall so far outside the scope of those
acceptable to the insurers of Auspicing bodies,
that you could think you are covered, when
you are NOT!

Activities
Auspicing – Is it really cheaper?
If you were to have a claim, would you want to know that
you are protected, or would you like to be presented
with a maybe circumstance.

Duty of Care – Practical Advice
 Have a safety register, a list of things that help focus safety



in the shed space
Just because you have been doing one thing for 60 years,
does not necessarily make it safe. Observe safety lessons
and take them on board
Have within your shed, a designated person or persons that
others can advise safety hazards to
Provide safety briefings
Have training sessions related to machinery
For goodness sake, use safety equipment
 Failure to use safety equipment could jeopardise the shed
along with the insurance scheme

Sean’s final Hoorah
 It has been a pleasure answering most of your
questions over the last two years, and really getting to
know some of you and your activities.
 As mentioned, this is my last act for the Men’s Shed in
this form as I leave InterRISK on Wednesday to spread
my wings and fly like a peacock.
Questions
 Your burning questions could be used to help other
sheds around the country, feel free to ask.
