Abstract
BIOLIFE is designed to fill up the existing gap by developing most adequate indicators for assessing and
monitoring the linkage between biodiversity and organic and low-input farming systems. We will both consider i)
the effects of agricultural practices on conservation of biodiversity (agriculturebiodiversity), and ii) the sustainable
use of agricultural genetic resources (species, cultivars, races) (biodiversityagriculture). Indicators will take into
account the wide variety of European agro-ecological environments. Such indicators are crucial to draft efficient
political and societal instruments that support a wider implementation of farm management practices
acknowledged to improve the state of biodiversity in European farmlands.

Landscape Research deals scientifically with the concepts,
relevant processes and impacts of the anthropogenic use of
landscapes. Prominent objects of landscape research are
agricultural landscapes, industrial landscapes and urban-rural
landscapes especially under changing framework conditions.
Landscape research acts at ...

The potentials and limits of economic quantifications
Economic valuation involves the assignment of money values to stocks
of environmental assets and to changes in environmental services and
functions (Pearce, Seccombe-Hett, 2000). It provides monetary
indication of the value of ecosystem goods and services.
The economic value of an ecosystem good or service relates to its
utility and the contribution it makes to human welfare. Things have
value insofar as they contribute towards meeting the needs and
satisfying pleasure of individuals.
Economic valuation is about individual preferences and choices.
