Parent’s Guide to Understanding
Parents’ Guide to Student Success
The Guide includes:
•Key items that children should be
learning in English language arts and
mathematics in each grade.
•Activities that parents can do at home
to support their child's learning.
•Methods for helping parents build
stronger relationships with their child's
teacher.

Washington State Assessment System
 MSP is now replaced with SMARTER Balanced
(SBAC) Testing System
 Last year SVSD took part in the pilot of the SBAC
• SBAC Assessments:
• English/Language Arts and Math: Grade 3–8 and 11*
• Science exams will still be the MSP for grades 5 and 8
• Science exams are required under ESEA but are not yet included in SBAC

Q: Who/what is “Smarter Balanced”?
Common Core Standards State Initiative
46 states adopted the CCSS in ELA/Literacy and math
+ Race to the Top Assessment Program
Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) – 26 states
PARCC – 20 states plus Washington DC
Key Elements and Principles
Measure individual student’s:
 Proficiency in Common Core State Standards
 Growth
 “on track”-ness to college- and career-readiness
 Readiness, at end of high school, for credit-bearing
entry level postsecondary courses

The “What”:
ELA and Math Content Shifts
 Shifts in ELA
1. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational
texts in addition to literature
2. Reading and writing grounded in evidence from the text
3. Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary
These apply to content area (social studies, science, and technical subject) teachers as well as to
English teachers.
 Shifts in Mathematics
1. Focus: 2-3 topics focused on deeply in each grade
2. Coherence: Concepts logically connected from one grade to the next and
linked to other major topics within the grade
3. Rigor: Fluency with arithmetic, application of knowledge to real world
situations, and deep understanding of mathematical concepts

Comparing Technology-Enabled
and Technology-Enhanced Items
Gregory is installing tile on a rectangular floor.
• He is using congruent square tiles that each have a side length of ½ foot.
• The area of the floor is 22 square feet.
• The width of the floor is 4 feet.
Use the grid and the tile below to model the floor.
What is the length, in feet, of the floor?
5.5 feet
Draw a line of symmetry through
the figure below.

Scoring Rule
Scoring Rule: Logic used to score student response
Which number is both a factor of 100
and a multiple of 5?
Scoring Rule:
A. 4
If student response = C, then correct
B. 40
Otherwise, incorrect
C. 50
D. 500
Classify each shape below based on whether it
contains at least one pair of parallel sides.
Scoring Rule:
If object 1 = B, 2 = A, 3 = B, 4 = A,
5 = A, then correct
Otherwise, incorrect
Technology-Enhanced Items
 Specialized interaction
 May have digital media for stimulus
 Same requirements as selected and constructed response
items
 Students manipulate information
 Defined responses
Technology-Enabled Items
 Digital Media
 Response Types
 Video
 Selected
 Animation
 Constructed
 Sound
 Interactive tools
What about English learners and students with
disabilities?
In September, SBAC adopted Usability, Accessibility, and Accommodations
Guidelines “to ensure next-generation assessments meet the needs of English
language learners and students with disabilities.”
www.smarterbalanced.org
The development of the guidelines included feedback from states, advisory
panels on English language learners and students with disabilities, and
national organizations.
