The Therapist: Transference
and Transparency
• Is transference analysis the only task of a
group therapist?
• What place does it hold in group therapy?
• What would be your approach?
• (Consider vignettes on page 191)
• Also see page 192 regarding issues with
transference
• Therapists in the group remind members
of
– 1.task at hand
– 2.the adult or teacher
• Therefore, group members will have their
own perception and reactions regarding
wanting to be special in the eyes of the
adult.
• Hence, a clinician may seek equality.
• Due to transference, therapists are
granted superpowers even when they
make mistakes.
• Simultaneously, they will appreciate when
they each require help from the therapist.
• But, the therapist is not omniscient =
paradox
• When they want a omniscient therapist
• they will deskill themselves
– They deskill self or therapist and attack
therapist out of being disillusioned
– Hence, it appears that as you have a group of
people the group seeks a leader = social
microcosm
• Two major approaches to facilitate
transference resolution
• Consensual validation
– (when encourage toward the therapist leads
to stage two)
• Increased therapist transparency
• Fear of escalation
• P209 when receiving feedback
• Therapist disclosure = is of the here and
now
• See Allan study p209
