Integrity and Character Education

What does a 21

st

century education look like at the Priory?

Character Education Committee Mission Statement

The mission of the character education committee is to develop a sense of how best to inculcate character at the Priory in the 21 st century.

(1) How does our community define character?

(2) What do best practices from other school communities reveal? (3) What does the most current scholarly research reveal about character education?

Character Education Committee Research Findings

• David Brooks’ The Limits of Empathy – Does teaching empathy change moral behavior?

• Paul Tough’s The Character Test

How does learning to deal with failure relate to one’s success and happiness?

• Tricia Bertram Gallant’s Academic Integrity in the 21

st

How does we stop kids from cheating?

How can we ensure students are learning?

Century

Character Education Committee Vision

(1) Develop discrete curricular opportunities that expose, encourage, and inculcate character • Morality and Social Justice • Senior Project • Chapel Services (2) (3) Develop discrete extracurricular opportunities that expose, encourage, and inculcate character • Retreats • • Service Hours Assembly Speakers • Honor Council?

Develop character ”assessments” that provide data around student growth and the efficacy of its curricular/extracurricular offerings

Character Education Committee Enduring Question How do we ensure that Priory students are developing the type of character necessary to become life-long learners that are able to productively serve a world in need of their gifts?

How well did Priory prepare you academically for college in the following areas: Exceptionally Well Very Well Adequately To Some Extent Not At All Overall, how well prepared were you academically for college?

Thinking critically and analytically Writing Being your own advocate; interacting with professors/teacher ’ s aides Working collaboratively with a group Taking a leadership role Being creative and innovative Having a global perspective Balancing workload/organizational skills Using technology Public speaking Understanding math/science concepts Doing research 31% 38% 34% 45% 32% 26% 26% 31% 29% 25% 22% 20% 15% 44% 36% 36% 23% 35% 40% 40% 32% 34% 32% 35% 35% 40% 6% 9% 12% 12% 16% 15% 18% 19% 19% 19% 20% 28% 23% 10% 10% 9% 6% 6% 10% 12% 9% 10% 14% 15% 10% 16% 9% 7% 10% 14% 10% 9% 5% 9% 9% 10% 7% 6% 6%

How valuable was the Senior Project in preparing you for college/life?

49% rated the SP as valuable/extremely valuable

Several alums felt the SP helped prepare them for college, and they liked the independence of exploring a topic in-depth

“It was great to be able to work in an area that would be particularly relevant to our passions and future goals. I feel much better prepared for certain elements of my college experience…”

Some graduates recognized that the level of value depended on their level of effort

“…I put a lot of effort into the project and that is why I think I feel so great about it. A lot of kids didn’t do anything sufficient with their project and because of this, didn’t really get anything out of it…”

Others questioned the project ’s college relevancy and/or structure

If you went on a school-sponsored international trip, how valuable was this experience?

90% rated the experience as valuable/extremely valuable

Alumni raved about the opportunity to learn about a country, acquire a worldly perspective, bond with peers/teachers and more…

“I went to Peru as part of our senior class trip. Not only was it an amazing experience to see Machu Picchu and (learn about) the history of Peru, but it was also eye-opening to see the lifestyle of Peruvians. One of our hotels was near some slums, and realizing how privileged I am was an extremely valuable experience.” “I went to Costa Rica and it really introduced me to sustainable living when taken to a level beyond the basic “recycle reuse” line of thought in America. It was also good for developing interpersonal relationship building skills.” “The Andes trip was one of the most enjoyable experiences of high school.”

How did your experience with/exposure to the Benedictine values affect the choices you ’ ve made in your life?

51% felt the values had a strong/very strong influence on their choices.

Alumni comments (45 out of 50) express an overwhelming appreciation for the positive impact of the values in their lives:

“I do believe that having these values has made me a better person overall.” “I have learned to appreciate the values Priory has taught me, and I try to carry these values with me wherever I go.” “What really affected me was the community at Priory… definitely had the greatest impact on my life, and… really helped me form relationships with both my peers and my professors at college.” “They have helped me to be compassionate and accepting of others.” “The emphasis on integrity is a value that resonated with me and has been present in all decisions and choices I make.”

How well did chapel talks, retreats, interaction with faculty, monks and staff, theology classes, or other classes help to instill the Benedictine values?

66% of alumni rated their interaction with faculty, monks and staff as working very well/extremely well in instilling the values

“You felt like the faculty really cared, which made you care about the other students more too.” “I feel the values were best communicated and instilled through the informal interaction, and by seeing the teachers/staff lead by example.”

Several alumni commented that the chapel talks and retreats were moving, inspirational, and provided a sense of community

“Senior retreat was exceptionally moving, as were chapel talks and certain teachers.” “The candle ceremonies… are irreplaceable memories for me.”

Comments on Theology classes were mixed

Teachers and/or classes strongly influenced college, career and life choices.

“World History… has had an enormous impact on my academic interests and ultimately on my beliefs and what I want to do with my life.” “Taking criminology… and psychology… were two of the most valuable courses I ever took… Without these two classes, I really have no idea what I would be doing now.” “Priory teachers really care about their students’ well-being and success. Eventually I decided that I want to teach as well, and Priory was a significant factor in this choice.” “I’m happy to say I can trace my academic growth from teachers and mentors I had at the Priory…. (My teacher) introduced me to the field of economics in a way that captured my attention so much that I decided to study economics in college.”

Alumni felt supported and their individual talents nurtured

“I feel like the teachers at Priory have known me better than I’ve known myself all along. They see something in their students even when their students don’t see it in themselves quite yet. Priory made me believe that I can make a difference and that I matter. What a beautiful gift.” “I loved that the teachers appeared to have such a vested interest in MY success.” “All the teachers were very supportive of my different endeavors and instilled confidence in my everyday life.”

Please comment on any particular courses, teachers or experiences at Priory that strongly changed or influenced your life: Themes cont.:

Close relationships with faculty and staff led to the development of strong interpersonal and self-advocacy skills

“My experiences with many teachers and staff members had a strong influence on my life. I felt that this was one of the best parts of my experience at the Priory. It also enabled me to enjoy meeting and talking to college professors and TA's more so then other students at (my college), which was integral to my success.” “Being in a small, closely-knit community helped me realize that that's what I want in a college and in a work environment. I loved having close relationships with my teachers, and have since striven to develop close ties with professors, advisors, and now work supervisors.”

Please comment on any particular courses, teachers or experiences at Priory that strongly changed or influenced your life: Themes cont.:

Priory ’ s strength lies in the collective whole Most alumni pointed to several individuals, classes and experiences that collectively shaped who they are today.

Close to 50 different individuals were mentioned at least once, if not many times, for their specific contributions .

“There were numerous teachers that influenced me and changed my life, almost too many to name.”

If there were anything you could change about your Priory experience that would better prepare you for college/life, what would it be?

Comments on desired changes fell into six main areas:

More writing, longer papers, and independent study projects

“More independent study projects. My first year at university, I had to write a 15 page research report.” “Although Priory’s writing program is relatively good… a lot of the writing I’ve done at college far outstrips what was required of me at Priory.

Stronger math/science preparation for college-level courses

“I was extremely unprepared for college-level science courses at (top Midwest college).” “All mathematics above calculus should be proof-based.”

If there were anything you could change about your Priory experience that would better prepare you for college/life, what would it be?

Earlier start on college counseling; help on the transition to college

“Have more… college counseling meetings very early on in high school career.” “Help you understand the transition from high school to college. No one really explains it to you, people just talk about it broadly.” “I think having alumni come back to speak to juniors and seniors about the college experience, in an open panel format, would have been extremely useful. One big thing that would have been helpful for me was having an honest conversation about how difficult college can be at times..”

Life skills training, including time management, personal finances, writing resumes and cooking

“Something to prepare us for living away from home.”

If there were anything you could change about your Priory experience that would better prepare you for college/life, what would it be?

Take advantage of more opportunities at Priory

“Reach out more to others and go outside my comfort zone, take a statistics course, pick up new activities sooner.” “I would have taken advantage of more clubs, trips, resources, electives, etc.” Take more challenging classes, try more APs...”

Classes on health and sex education

“Health class is necessary... It would be useful to include more non-extreme examples about life – especially issues and relationships.” “It is completely inappropriate and irresponsible that Priory does not have a Sex Education Program.”

If there were anything you could change about your Priory experience that would better prepare you for college/life, what would it be?

The most common response to this question, however, was that the respondent wouldn ’ t change anything:

“Priory did an amazing job preparing me for college. Compared to the other people I have observed in college Priory students are tremendously more prepared than non-Priory people.” “I had the time of my life at Priory, and nothing could have helped me more in terms of preparing me for college.” “I honestly had the best high school experience of all my college and graduate school friends.” “Overall, I loved and still love the Priory and you guys did an amazing job of educating the person as a whole.” “I absolutely love Priory and my experience at Priory was outstanding. It has been very important in shaping the person I have become.”
