classical written Chinese =
“文言” (in modern Chinese)
Lingua franca in East Asia:
Areas of China with different “dialects”
Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, etc.
strict and stable norms
no fixed pronunciations (except in the poetry)
“artificial” language?
prestigious status (nobles, priests, & scholars)
Counterpart of classical Latin (or Sanskrit, classical
Arabic, etc.) in East Asia
Newton’s “Principia” (1687)
Up to the Nara period, most “publications”
were in 純正漢文 (e.g. 『大宝律令』, 『日本書
replaced the role of the “main-stream written
language”.
純正漢文, however, kept being used as the
In the Edo period, 漢文 was both (i) prestigious
(used as the academic language) and (ii) commonly
learnt (by 武家, 町人, etc.).
Mass-publications of Chinese texts; Popularization of 訓読
The prestige/popularity of 漢文 gradually declined
through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras.
Today 漢文 is still taught in secondary education as
a compulsory subject; also, 漢文 is still practiced as
a hobby.

Perfect Wisdom Sutra’)
