Using Library Resources Effectively Core Skills Suggest what ‘Peer Review’ means Scholarly journal articles have been peer-reviewed, i.e. scrutinised by an editorial board prior to publication. The guide Academic Journal or Popular Magazine will help you to distinguish between peer reviewed (academic/scholarly) journals and popular magazines. Using Library Resources Effectively Core Skills Suggest what ‘Peer Review’ means – which statement do you think is correct? A) Articles in magazines are read by the public who then comment on them and contribute their opinions to the letters page of the next edition of that magazine B) Articles that are written online so that anyone can add to or take away elements from the original ? ? C) Articles intended for scholarly journals are scrutinized by an editorial board who judge the article by exacting standards of quality, originality and research methodology ? Using Library Resources Effectively Core Skills Explain how the typical layout of a journal article can help you read it effectively A Peer Reviewed journal article is usually written in a standard format: 1. The article often begins with an abstract or summary of the whole article including the conclusions. Start by reading this. 2. This is followed by a lengthy article in full. You might want to skim through the section headings or first sentence of each paragraph to get a flavour of what the article is about. 3. The conclusion, should sum up the whole article. Read this. 4. Now, of course, go back and look at the sections in a little more detail if you need to. 5. At the end of the article, you will see a list of references that the author has used to back up the research in the article. It might be useful to look at these if you want to take your research further. For more information on developing academic reading and writing skills, go to the Skills@Portsmouth unit on Moodle. Using Library Resources Effectively Core Skills Explain how the typical layout of a journal article can help you read it effectively Link out to the PDF or HTML Full Text of this journal article. Using Library Resources Effectively Developing Skills Use the information you have found in creative and interesting ways You may be asked to present your research findings in a creative and interesting way. This may include presenting your research to a group through a video presentation or an engaging PowerPoint presentation incorporating images, video and sound clips. Visit the Mediascape to discover how to find audio-visual information. You may even present your research as a Mindmap - a focus point for discussion. You might capture your research as a visual diary – taking photos or grabbing screenshots of your research journey; you might choose to present this as a blog or if you are working as a group, a wiki might be an interesting solution. Using Library Resources Effectively Developing Skills Use the information you have found in creative and interesting ways Michael, Courtney, Maria and Emma need to work together to produce some guidance for their fellow students on planning a field trip. A wiki is a good way to collaborate, you don’t have to be in the same room. Their classmates can also access the information.
