This section of UPLift! is aimed at all students. It builds on the core skills section helping
you to make more effective use of the University of Portsmouth’s Library Resources. For
example, it will help you to select better quality information sources, discover more
about journals and when to use them, it will also help you to understand how to
reference a wider range of sources.
Perhaps you know how to do some of these things already? Take the short
quiz to find out.
Perhaps you need to develop a particular skill? Take the link to find out more.

Identify what journals are
The term ‘journal’ refers, in this instance, to what is more commonly
known as a magazine. The contents are usually known as articles. Visit
the following sections of the Information Landscape to find out the subtle
differences between:
1) Scholarly journal articles
2) Trade and professional journal articles
3) Magazines

Identify what journals are
Journals are often broadly categorized into 3 types – magazine, trade or
professional and scholarly or academic. Can you identify the type of journal
from the description?
Articles are much longer and
written by academics. They
include reference lists too.
Often they are referred to as
‘peer reviewed’ journals.
Scholarly or academic
journal, e.g.
Journal of Victorian
Culture
?
They promote standards and
best practice, review
products and exhibitions.
You can read all about
current industry news.
Trade or professional
journals, e.g.
New Scientist
?
You will see lots of adverts as
well as short articles. They
have popular appeal and are
often published weekly or
monthly.
?
Magazines, e.g.
Vogue

List some of the key journals for your subject area
Perhaps your tutors have listed some journal titles to which they would
like you to refer regularly? Have a look at your reading list.
Otherwise, one of the best ways of seeing what titles the Library holds in
your subject area is to find the current journal display for your subject
area. Use the information and maps on this page to help you locate them.
Most of the journals are shelved on the second floor
You may also want to browse e-journals by subject. You will see this if you
take the options link under the
tab on the Library homepage.
Your Faculty Librarian may also recommend some key journals on the
My Subject pages.

Locate and access journals in print and electronic format
In order to find out if the Library has the journal article you require, firstly
you need to understand a journal reference. Then you will need to
understand that different services search for journal articles in different
ways. Have a look at this journal reference then see how to find out if its
available either to read online or in print format in the library.
Step 1: understanding a journal reference
Shanken, A.M. (2005). From the Gospel of Efficiency to
Modernism. A history of Sweet’s Catalogue, 1906 –
1947. Design Issues, 21(2), 28-47.
Match each item below to the relevant part of the reference above
a) journal title b) article title c) author d) year of publication
e) volume and part number f) page numbers

Suggest what ‘Peer Review’ means
Scholarly journal articles have been peer-reviewed, i.e. scrutinised by an
editorial board prior to publication. The guide Academic Journal or
Popular Magazine will help you to distinguish between peer reviewed
(academic/scholarly) journals and popular magazines.
Using Library

Core Skills
Suggest what ‘Peer Review’ means – which statement do you think is correct?
A) Articles in magazines are read by the public who then comment on them
and contribute their opinions to the letters page of the next edition of that
magazine
B) Articles that are written online so that anyone can add to or take away
elements from the original

Core Skills
Explain how the typical layout of a journal article can help you
read it effectively
A Peer Reviewed journal article is usually written in a standard format:
1. The article often begins with an abstract or summary of the whole article including the
conclusions. Start by reading this.
2. This is followed by a lengthy article in full. You might want to skim through the section
headings or first sentence of each paragraph to get a flavour of what the article is about.
3. The conclusion, should sum up the whole article. Read this.
4. Now, of course, go back and look at the sections in a little more detail if you need to.
5. At the end of the article, you will see a list of references that the author has used to back
up the research in the article. It might be useful to look at these if you want to take your
research further.
For more information on developing academic reading and writing skills, go to the
Skills@Portsmouth unit on Moodle.

Abstract
It is useful to start by reading the
abstract – a summary of the
article. It introduces the main
themes of the argument and
summarises the conclusion too.

Identify a range of good quality statistical sources
Faculty Librarians may recommend statistical sources on the My subject
pages. They can usually be located under the Other key resources section.
The Sociology My Subject page is a good place to start for the most
common statistical sources.
If you search the web for statistics, ensure that you identify which
organisation has compiled them and why.

Check other libraries’ catalogues, e.g. COPAC
You may want to visit another library to see if they have the books you
require for your research. Did you know that you can search many library
catalogues from wherever you have internet access?
If you want to find out what books are available on a subject, COPAC is a
good place to start. It is a merged catalogue of some of the UK’s largest
research libraries, including the British Library.
You may want to visit Portsmouth City Council’s Library Service. Try out
their catalogue before you go to see if they have the items you require.
Anyone can become a member find out how on their website.

Make an inter-library loan request
It is unlikely that everything you need will be available in the University Library or
online, especially when you begin to research more personal areas of interest e.g.
for your dissertation. The Interlibrary Loan service enables you to obtain essential
articles and books from other libraries.
You can find further information on the Interlibrary Loan Service from the Services
and Facilities section of the Library website.

Use SCONUL Access to visit other libraries
You can visit many other University Libraries by joining a scheme called
SCONUL Access. If you are a full time undergraduate (UG) you can visit
other libraries during the vacation; part-time UGs, distance learners,
placement students, postgraduates and staff, may be entitled to limited
borrowing rights at other institutions. Member Libraries include links to
their catalogues from the SCONUL web site so you can search their
collections to help you decide if you need to visit.

Explain how Turnitin can help to improve your own work
Turnitin is a piece of software which checks your work for matching text on web pages,
in electronic journals and in other authored materials, thereby providing a plagiarism
detection service. Here at the University of Portsmouth you can use it yourself to make
sure that you have not inadvertently plagiarised. Find out more by visiting the
eLearning Centre’s Turnitin for Students guide.

Use the information you have found in creative and interesting ways
You may be asked to present your research findings in a creative and
interesting way. This may include presenting your research to a group
through a video presentation or an engaging PowerPoint presentation
incorporating images, video and sound clips. Visit the Mediascape to
discover how to find audio-visual information. You may even present your
research as a Mindmap - a focus point for discussion.
You might capture your research as a visual diary – taking photos or
grabbing screenshots of your research journey; you might choose to
present this as a blog or if you are working as a group, a wiki might be an
interesting solution.
