The Book Of Acts
28 Thrilling chapters.
It is the sequel to the Gospels and the gateway to the doctrines of the Epistles that follow. The author Luke, the beloved physician. The date is about 63 AD when Paul was in prison.
The Book Of Acts
It is a two volume history of the New Testament church: Volume 1- The History of the Founder of the church Volume 2- The history of the Followers of the Church. Call with a biblical question.
What A History
FAITH AND ZEAL are the two words that characterize the NT Church.
We need to strive to reproduce these two words in the 21 st century.
What A History
NT Christians were just like us.
They knew how to fear men and be timid, but they fought those challenges and stood strong.
Peter had denied the Lord 3 times; Paul was a former enemy of Christ, but their zealous fire and that of those they (and others) preached to and converted, became a fire that consumed the Roman Empire.
Why The Book Of Acts?
It is an historical apologetic.
It is fact, not fiction; history not mythology.
Myths begin with “once upon a time…” Luke penned the book in historical context with people, places, times , names and events which can be checked out and verified.
Why The Book Of Acts?
The spirit of the NT church was sacrificial; The message was Jesus (crucified, resurrected and ascended); and the result (victory).
The Power Of the Resurrection
In Luke 24:13ff these are two discouraged disciples, but when they realize the Lord is risen, their whole attitude changes.
All the apostles were changed by the reality of the resurrection of Jesus.

He is risen, He is Messiah, He is coming again, He reigns now on His throne over His Operators are standing by.
The Power Of the Resurrection
Many today love the Lord, have faith and concern, but have lost their burning enthusiasm and zeal for lost souls and the Lord.
Many today make sure they give the waitress her 10% but then make a regular practice of tipping the Lord (giving Him what they have left over, after serving themselves).
How To Change
Go back to Golgotha and see the cross and the agony, hate and love that is there.
Then go to the empty tomb and read Rom. 1:16 to see that the power of the gospel is the resurrection from the dead.
How To Change
We must preach what they did in the first century. They preached the resurrection of Jesus and the hope we have of victory over death if we are obedient.
Victory In Christ
At the conclusion of every crisis in Acts there was victory.

Faith Is The Victory
Do we believe we can have victory?
Do we believe the great commission and take it personally?
Do we believe the Lord is with us?
Do we believe Jesus lived, died, was buried and arose from the dead and that He has gone to prepare a place for us that where He is we can be also?
When we have this kind of faith, we can experience the victory that is only in Christ.
This type of faith will move us to fall out of love with the world.

Jerusalem Section
Apostles endowed with the Holy Spirit to deliver an unstoppable message.
An infallible Word placed in the hands of fallible men changed the world.
Jerusalem section:2-7- Pentecost in Acts 2 is the hub of the Bible. It was the day to which the OT Patriarchs and Prophets had spoken. The day in which the eternal purpose of God would be revealed to mankind. This was the day of “beginnings” as noted by Peter in Acts 11:15.

Prophetic fulfillment regarding redemption (Isa. 2:2-4; Dan. 2:44; 7:13-14; Jer. 31:31-34) all of these passages find their fulfillment in Acts 2.

It was the beginning of the Holy Spirit as the Comforter to men. Jesus had promised the 12 in John 14:15,16 that He would send the Comforter to guide them into all truth.

Acts 3- a man asks for alms and received legs. This set the stage for Peter’s next address.
Peter makes three points: Jesus is the suffering servant of prophecy vs. 18 Jesus is the great prophet of Prophecy vs. 22-24

Jesus is the fulfillment of the seed promise to Abraham vs. 25-26.
The result was that they were told to be quiet and not preach anymore.
They refused- cannot help but speak things seen and heard.
Identifying Marks Of The Early Church
Acts 4-6.
BOLD PREACHING- Peter and John did not huddle in fear nor quit. They spoke out boldly “proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead” (Acts 4:2).
What does bold preaching produce?
GROWTH- those who maintain strong, potent, distinctive preaching will save souls.
Identifying Marks Of The Early Church
Bold preaching produces PERSECUTION. In these two chapters the apostles are arrested, threatened and beaten yet they keep on preaching and telling the story of Jesus.
Bold Preaching requires PRAYER (4:23ff, 31).

Every church has problems and Jerusalem was no exception.

(cont’d) Acts 2:14-36 David had predicted the Lord’s resurrection when he said, “Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh will also rest in hope, because You will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.” (Ps 16:9-10) After quoting this, Peter said that David was both dead and buried and his tomb was with them to that day.

(cont’d) Acts 2:14-36 Continuing his thought, Peter said that David, being a prophet, and knowing God had sworn to him that of the fruit of his body according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his (David’s) throne Peter adds that David foresaw this and spoke concerning the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.

And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, (28) returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet.

(29) Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot." Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him.

(32) (30) So (31) The place in the Scripture which he read was this: "HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO THE SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE OPENED
(33) JUSTICE WAS TAKEN AWAY, AND WHO WILL DECLARE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS TAKEN FROM THE EARTH." (34) IN So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?" HIS (35) HUMILIATION HIS Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.
(36) Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See,
here is
water.

But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.
