Criterion 3:

Program Outcomes and Assessment

 Program Outcomes are statements that describe what students are

expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation

 Each program must: – Have an

assessment process with documented results

. The process must demonstrate that the outcomes important to the mission of the institution and objectives of the program are being measured.

– Provide evidence that the results of the assessment process are applied to the

further development and improvement

of the program August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 6

Criterion 3: Program Outcomes*

 The

assessment process

should include direct and indirect measures – – – It should

not rely solely on self-report

Evidence must be “

convincing

” surveys and evidence that the material is “covered” in the curriculum Student

self-assessment

,

opinion surveys

, and course

grades are not

,

by themselves

,

acceptable

documenting achievement of outcomes methods for – Evidence must be

directly linked to the specific outcome

being assessed – Acceptable tools:

student portfolios

, subject content

examinations

, subject

projects

,

assignments

, faculty evaluation of

work/study

,

internships

or co-ops, etc.

* From Guidelines to Institutions, Team Chairs and Program Evaluators on Interpreting and Meeting the Standards Set Forth in Criterion 3 of the Engineering Accreditation Criteria August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 7

Criterion 3: You Are Key Providers of Evidence of Outcome Achievement

 Need your help collecting sample portfolios of graded student work in

both F06 and Sp07

 In each UG course, we need to collect copies of an

excellent

, an

average

and a

poor

example of each completed and graded assignment (per

syllabus

): – Homework – – – Exams Project reports Laboratory reports, etc.

Course leads

responsible for providing one representative set for the entire course.

August 23, 2006 in multi-section courses are ABET Accreditation of ISAT 8

Criterion 4: Professional Content

    An ABET accreditable curriculum must include: – A component combining college-level

mathematics and basic sciences

appropriate to ISAT – –

Applied Science

topics appropriate to ISAT (Criterion 8) A

general education

component Each component must be treated adequately

and per the objectives of the program and institution.

Curriculum must culminate in

comprehensive projects or capstone experiences

based on cumulative knowledge and skills acquired in earlier coursework.

Tables 4-1a and b attempt to breakdown the course sequences into these components August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 9

Criterion 8:

Program-Specific Criteria

 Each program must satisfy applicable

program criteria and outcomes implied by its title

– – Curricular topics and integration Faculty qualifications (ISAT):  Program criteria exist for several applied science programs, such as Quality Management, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety and Health Physics  Specific ISAT Criteria: – Integration of physical, biological, and earth sciences concepts and technology – – Professional acquisition and use of information Use of the computer as a problem-solving tool August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 10

Criterion 4: Program Content Items Needed for Evaluation

 The course material needed for evaluation – Textbook and other required material (e.g., manuals, reference booklets, standards documents, and so forth) – – Syllabus and course policies A complete set of assignments, tests, and important handouts – Samples of graded student work on all assignments, written reports and other documents, and tests. Examples of excellent, satisfactory, and poor student work should be included.

– If some of the above documentation is online (e. g., in an instructor’s web site), please indicate this, and have a computer available at or near the course displays so ABET Accreditation of ISAT 13 for accessing any such materials

Criterion 5: Faculty

     Sufficient staffing level for the

enrollment

expected

outcomes

of the program Sufficient staffing level for: – Adequate

student-faculty interaction

– – – – Student

advising

University

service

and counseling activities

Industry

and

government Professional development

interaction and Need your input Today in (Tables 5-1 and 5-2) Appropriate and adequate

qualifications

Effective role in the program’s

guidance, evaluation and improvement

Supporting evidence: – Faculty CV’s ( Thank you for all who submitted a CV ) – – Staffing/enrollment statistics Faculty random interviews during site visit August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 14

Criterion 5:

Faculty Workload Summary (Table 5-1)

In col. 1 in parenthesis enter % time assigned to ISAT undergraduate (UG) program effort

In cols. 3, 4 and 5 enter % of time dedicated to ISAT UG effort.

Give us your best guesses and will refine projections later.

August 23, 2006 ABET Accreditation of ISAT 15

Criterion 5:

Faculty Qualifications Summary (Table 5-2)

 The level of activities listed in the last three columns is an estimate of the average over the last three years, ending with AY 06-07  In 3 rd col. from the right place the acronyms of only the professional societies in which you are active.  Because of our diverse disciplines, please define each acronym on the reverse side of the sheet.  Give us your best estimates now and will update the projections later, if necessary.
