• 1b. Why are the 800s to the 1100s considered a golden age
for Japanese literature and art?
• Nobles supported the arts and made great advances in
literature, painting, calligraphy, and drama.
• 1c. Do you think women in Heian had more rights and
freedoms than women in other societies? Why or why not?
• Women were excluded from politics and expected to serve but
were able to write and take part in court society.
• 2a. What were two forms of Buddhism that developed in
Japan?
• Zen and Pure land Buddhism developed in Japan.
• 2b. How was religion among Japan’s nobles different from
religion among the common people?
• Nobles took part in many rituals and ceremonies, whereas the
common people simply chanted Buddha’s name to help
meditate and reach an enlightened state.
