Outline
 Warm up: Finding a Particular Article
 Database in Focus
 ERIC
 SCOPUS
 Social Sciences Citation Index
2
HKIEd Library Website
http://www.lib.ied.edu.hk
Search for books,
journals, media
resources
Essential tips: make sure you are familiar with the HKALL, the request / recall
system, library delivery service between the Tai Po MMW Library and Town
Centre branch, and understand how to read the location codes (e.g. MMW
Lib Book)
3
Finding a Particular Article

Is this article available in the Library?

There are more than one way to check whether we have a particular article. The
simplest way is to check the Library catalogue by journal title (not the article title)
E.g.
Sadler, P. M. & Good, E. (2006). The impact of self- and peer-grading on student learning.
Educational Assessment, 11(1), 1-31. doi:10.1207/s15326977ea1101_1
4
Search the Library catalogue to see if we have the
print copy and / or electronic copy of the Journal
We may have more than one database providing access to the same journal
but they may contain issues for different years – and some of them use an
embargo period (e.g. latest 12 months not available)
E-Journals – if you are off-campus and only
interested in online availability
 Search by Keywords
 Browse by Subject or Title
 Citation Linker
7
How the Citation Linker works?
 Is this article available in the Library?

8
How the Citation Linker works?
Input as much essential
information as you know:
journal title, year, volume,
issue and start page

Searching tips: Expand your search
 Use “expanders” from the database search screen to expand
your search
 Use Boolean operator “OR” to include more search terms
e.g. web-based OR internet OR electronic OR digital
“secondary education” or “high school”
 Use truncation (*) to expand your search term in alternative
way
e.g. adolescen* to search for adolescent, adolescence, etc.
17
Searching tips: Narrow your search
 Use “Limiter” from the database search screen to limit your
search results in various way
 Consider the suggested “Narrow Search Results by Subject”
from the search result screen
 Use Boolean operator “AND” to limit search results to a
narrower scene
e.g. peer assessment AND higher education

abstract as the basis for
searching and then rank
the thousands of results
by relevancy

If the SmartText search
results are not satisfactory,
add the most important
keywords in the search to
improve the relevancy
