Standard One The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed.
Your students are having problems defining their research topic.
Have them take the Choosing a Topic Tutorial in Blackboard Have them use the Assignment Research Calculator – Step 2
Standard Two The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
Students say they can’t find anything!
Have them attend a Mindmapping Workshop put on by the Information and Outreach Services Dept. in the Library
Standard Three The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.
You are worried because students are relying on
Wikipedia and Google !
Have them take the Google for Researchers Workshop offered by the Library!
Standard Four The information literate student, individually, or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
You give them a choice regarding the method for presenting their information.
Standard Five The information literate student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.
Students struggle with plagiarism issues and don’t adequately cite sources.
Have them take the Citing and Plagiarism online tutorial located in Blackboard
Responsibility for Information Literacy Shared responsibility of all educators and information providers Requires collaboration of faculty and librarians Must be integrated into courses at all levels to provide reinforcement of skills
