PUBLIC LIBRARY KRUŠEVAC
Public library
Kruševac established
1857. (Reading
Room)
The Library has
around 130.000
volumes and 7.500
users
30 library employers
INTERNET
The Internet is changing the world we live in. It is a change no less
significant than the Industrial Revolution
Over the last two decades, information technologies and the Internet have
been transforming the way companies do business, the way students learn
Internet access has become a fundamental right for all citizens and
responsible governments have a duty to provide it
The development of the Internet enable abandoning the idea about central
contents, which were impracticable, and widely opened the possibility to
access distributive contents – distributive knowledge
In the 21st century, the function of the libraries, museums and archives,
heritage institutions doing similar jobs and called memory guardians got a
new dimension. The digitalization fundamentally changed the function of
these institutions. The technological development has changed the priority
of services, the basic services in the future will be digital
NEW AND CONTEMPORARY
SERVICES
Following the Pullman`s digital guidelines, the Public
Library Krusevac offered new and contemporary
services and created new strategies that will be
supported by the users and the way to fulfill them
The Public Library Krusevac development its own digital
local history collections considering that the most
important thing is to ,,keep the collective european
heritage, providing access to that heritage improving
education and tourism and development of the electronic
contents industry”
WHY DIGITAL LIBRARIES?
The fundamental reason for building digital libraries is a
belief that they will provide better delivery of information
that was possible in the past
Traditional libraries are a fundamental part of society, but
they are not perfect
It is better served by sitting at a personal computer
connected to a communication network than by making a
visit to a library
The user is able to consult materials that are stores on
computers around the world
THE DIGITAL LIBRARY BRINGS THE
LIBRARY TO THE USER`S DESK
We used the possibility to build large scale services where
collections of information are stores on computers. A network
connects the computers to personal computers on the users desk
Digital libraries bring together facets of many disciplines, and
experts with different back – grounds and different approach
With a digital library on the desk top, the reader need never visit a
library building
The desk of digital library is never closed
A Digital library is not just a collection of disk drives, it will be part of
a culture
Digital libraries are not perfect. Computer systems can fail, and
networks may be slow or unreliable
POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF
DIGITAL LIBRARIES
Placing digital information on a network makes it available to
everybody
Materials are never checked out to other readers, mis-shelved,
omission or stolen
The scope of the collections expand beyond the walls of the library
Private papers in a office on in a library on the other side of the
world use as easy to use as materials in the local library
PUBLIC LIBRARY – CENTAR
OF LOCAL COMMUNITY
Contemporary librarianship theories set the library in the center of the
society which cultivates the social relationship and adherence
The library also has its own connected roles: education, entertainment and
communication
The difference in the librarian services is in relation to the different user
groups, although most of the services and product are design for average
user
The technology development has changed the services priority, basic
services in the future will be digital services, and libraries has already
started to establish their services to a mixture of physical objects and
electronic items
Providing these services in various formats and medias, coexistence of
traditional and electronic information sources, became primary librarian
goals, which developed new form between the organizations which do not
depend on time and place
The public libraries have started to create new source for the local history,
cultural events, local cultural contents in the libraries using electronic
sources, especially the Internet, includes building web sites containing
information important for the local community
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DIGITAL
PROGRAM
Digitalization of tradition
materials – printed or painted,
is a process which includes the
existing and creates digital
cultural heritage
The development of the digital
program offered the public
libraries the possibility to
attract the citizens which may
have nor used their services,
to become active and trained
participants in using the
possibilities of the wires world
DIGITALIZATION OF THE CULTURAL
HERITAGE IN SERBIA
Serbia has very rich old printing tradition
Since 2003., the National Library of Serbia and the National
Digitalization Center are engaged in the international projects in
order to protect and present the Serbian national written cultural
heritage.
NCD and the National Committee UNESCO for digitalization
2005/07, at the meeting on 1. March 2007. bring document ,,The
recommended meta-data format for the objects of the digital national
heritage (mobile cultural goods)”
The public libraries in Serbia are not included in the existing
digitalization projects.
However certain libraries have found more space to initiate
digitalization projects in the local framework aimed to present their
own cultural and historical legacy
DIGITALIZATION IN PUBLIC
LIBRARY KRUŠEVAC
The Public Library Krusevac has started its Internet presentation within the
first serbian virtual network ,,Libraries of our neighbourhood” (Biblioteke
našeg okruženja” (www.biblioteke.org.yu), in 2000, and since 2002. library
has its own web site
Since 2005. the Public Library Krusevac has become a member of the
Virtual Libraries of Serbia (VBS) – COBISS-SR online public access
catalogue
Considering that in order to work in the СOBISS-SR and connection to the
VBS, it was necessary to have Internet access for 24 hours, and these
technical possibilities were used for other necessities, first of all for creating
a digital library
FROM THE CULTURAL PAST OF
KRUŠEVAC
The Public Library Krusevac has begun digitalization in 2003.
Following the modern librarian tendencies we have decided to digitalize the
local collection, because for that library collection we can surely suppose
that cannot to be found in collections of other Public Libraries in Serbia, but
it is definitely not present in the funds of the National Library of Serbia
In such a way we give our modest contribution to the digitalization of the
Serbian written wealth, and a large contribution to the popularization of local
spiritual and cultural heritage
Considering that in our library amongst the monographic editions we mostly
have publications printed in the 2nd half of 20th century and that the
copyrights haven’t been solved in Serbia as in the European Union (PLRPublic Landing Rights), we have decided to start the digitalization with small
librarian material; non-book materials like postcards, photographs, posters,
art exhibition catalogues
The digitalization has developed through two projects:
1. From the cultural past of Krusevac (direct scanning – postcards, art
exhibition catalogues, invitations, printed articles that follow an event) and
2. Building a web site containing digitalized contents of interest for the
local community
,,WINDOWS TO OUR PAST”
The Home is space and time
The Local collection is not
limited with time
The Local collection is a
concept presenting the form
and means that something is
collected into one place,
specified with teritorial concept
of home with its contents and
origin bonts the local collection
to a specific teritory, specified
by the administrative borders
(the borders can be changed)
ONLINE PHOTO ALBUMS
The site materials are organized
into 34 albums and 7 categories
(779 files or Digital pictures,
images)
Libraries in the world, especially
USA developed digital photo
collections
about
the
local
community under different names:
,,A Window to Our Past”,
,,Remembering Harold”, ,,Now
and Then”, ,,Learning with digital
contents”...
The photograph, which strenght
lies in the moment, important for
local community are curently
organized in 5 albums
ONLINE PHOTO ALBUMS
ANZIST CARDS FROM HISTORICAL
ARCHIVE KRUŠEVAC
The anzist cards (postcard between two
world wars with a motiv of boy and
girl, girl or motiv from film) from
Historical Archive Kruševac, organized
as a category containg 12 albums, has
fullfilled the postcards collection mainly
with genre and girls motives
The European cities category, containg
three albums, although having a small
number of digital images was the most
interesting for our users
It is also worth to mention the postcards
collection with the theme of the Balkan
wars, which was no present in the
library, but now we have it digitally,
thanks to the scaning samples from
Historical archive Kruševac
POSTCARDS FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS IN
OUR ONLINE PHOTO ALBUM
With the digitalization we also
got samples of old postcards of
Kruševac, printed in the XIX
century (a collection of
postcards provided by a
private collector – Slobodan
Marković for our online album)
This way we can reconstructed
the old town of Kruševac, then
and now, to compare the
streets and buildings, to see
the growth of the town, the way
it looked once, where werw the
objects important for the
cultural history of the town
ONLINE PHOTO ALBUM
The digitalization conception of
these materials was to be a kind
of a guide through the town of
Krusevac, its cultural and historical
monuments that tell the story of
its rich cultural past, and the city
tradition that should be presented
to the new generations and saved
for the future. Considering the
concept of the library as a service
of the local community, this album
was supposed to be a kind of a
tourist guide through Krusevac
and its surrounding and to
influence the cultural tourism in
the city. The Tourist organization
in Krusevac now has its own web
site that can be accessed from the
library homepage.
PROJECT GOALS
The Public Library Krusevac showed that it is able to adjust and develop
itself along with the changes in the society, to help the development of the
cultural differences using various communication methods
In this way the Library has developed service strategies to improve the
services long-term and short-term. It also created departments that offer the
user services without any limitation. Note that the digitalization works are
not part of the librarian occupation and are not provided in the current Law
on the librarian functions from the 1994. year, (when the digitalization
started in the USA), and is not fulfilled later
The Public Library Krusevac started the process of providing services in
various formats and on different medias
More important is the creation of the local history collection to the
community in order to present the local spirital heritage, free access to
informations, attraction of new users that havent used the Library yet
Not less important is the completion of missing examples of the library
materials with digital copies from the IAK, the museum, the gallery and the
Filatelic Society.
HOW WE STARTED?
DIGITALIZATION
Many people think that digitalization is the same as scanning, which
is wrong, because scanning is the just the first step in the
digitalization process
The library has two scanners (office, not professional)
The first stage of digitalization was scanning (on office sccaner HP
2300). With the purchase of these two devices we got programs for
their exploatating
After the scanning, the following stage is archiving, organized the
pictures into adequate files, and we needed picture preview
programs like ACEESee7.0
Organizing the pictures preview is mostly by their motives
The next stage was processing the pictures in program Adobe Photo
Shop
PROGRAMS FOR
DIGITALIZATION
Digital pictures gained in this way were compressed into jpg format
Each document had to be processed in this way in order to be used in the
Internet
The entire work can be used for any collection of photographs or postcard
We started with smaller documents - one document, one picture – postcard
or poster
Because of the poster dimensions, we could not scan it, so we have taken
photographs using digital camera with stand
It is an open source program, PHP (Pearl Home Programming) My SQL
(Structured Query Language)
The files are inserted and the document are describes in real time, on line
It is important that the local collection and web site Public library Kruševac
supports Cyrillic culture
PHASE OF DIGITALIZATION IN PUBLIC LIBRARY
KRUSEVAC
The written word tradition in Kruševac is very long
First phase was digitalization non-book materials
In expanding the education and culture by the schools and libraries,
which developed independently and inside the schools, they have
printing houses since the 19th century
Considering the time distance, the Public Library Kruševac prepares
a second phase of digitalization that will manage the periodic papers
printed in Kruševac
OPENING A PRINTING HOUSE
IN KRUŠEVAC
Establishing printing houses and
opening bookstores were first
class events for the cultural
development of Krusevac
The first printing house in
Krusevac started its work in june
1885, and was established by
Aleksandar Malasevic and Djordje
Budimovic
The first magazine wasprinted in
that printinghouse was ”Žiča”
(1889). Budimovic and Malasevic,
separate in 1896 and work
independently
LOCAL NEWSPAPERS IN
KRUŠEVAC
The bibliography of the
“Krusevac’s local papers” of
Slobodana Simonovića, M.A.
tracks all the papers published in
Krusevac (304) titles,
19th century - 4 titles. The first
magazin from Kruševac is ”Žiča”
(1889.), ”Glas iz Kruševca''
(1890.) ,,Narodna samouprava''
(1891.) the first krusevac gazette
,,Đavolan'' (1892.)
Between the 1901. – 1940. – 28
magazines were published,
between the 1941. – 1945. – 10
magazine were published
and after 1945. – 262 newspapers
and magazines
DIGITALIZATION OF LOCAL
PERIODICALS
By the newspapers and magazines printed in Krusevac, kept in the
Library, the Historical Archive Krusevac, a number of papers is
spreaded in the librarian funds of the former Yugoslav republics
By the systematic collection in the 70s and 80s in the 20th century, a
set of labels is completed and microfilmed, in the National Library in
Zagreb, and a part in Niš. For example the Library has a set of
“Bagdala” magazines from this period in microfilm. However the
digitalization process of this kind materials cannot be technically
processed in Public library Kruševac
The Library plans to digitalize the local perioducal, and some
already digitalized edition appear in digital and printed form, in the
2008.
STRATEGIC PARTNERS
The NBKS management figured out that the digitalization is a corporate
project, and exploration of museum and archive paterials is a base for the
future informatic-documentary center
NBKS has found strategic partners in the , so called, heritage institutions,
or the institutions known as memory guardians (archives, museums), The
Historical Archice Krusevac, Museum and the Filatelic Society Krusevac
In the same time the digitalization enabled formation of a network of formal
and informal connections with other libraries
The Library management is ready to find new possibilities for financing by
applying to various open competitions with the digitalization project
The digitalization also developed new form of cooperation between the
organuzations that don’t depend on the time and place
In the projected development policy of the library, public relations and
popularization of the Library through program activities for the Library
members started the press clipping digitalization
PRESS CLIPPING
In the projected development policy of the library, public relations
and popularization of the Library through program activities for the
Library members started the press clipping digitalization
One of the significant sources for exploration and research of the
present and past of Krusevac is the modern paper materials which is
a significant source of information for researching all the aspects of
the life in Krusevac – press clipping
There is a press clipping in the Local collection that was earlier
created by the Newspaper documentation Belgrade and provided it
yearly to the Library
In accordance with the changes in the society and the possibiity to
serve the military in some of the cultural institutions, NBKS got a
soldier – computing teacher, charged with scanning the press
clipping form the previous years
USERS AND USE OF DIGITAL
COLLECTION
Explore the behavior, place, and role of
users of digital libraries and the reasons,
ways, and means related to their use of
digital libraries
Role of users through the process of
design, development, and evaluation of
digital libraries
VARIOUS CATEGORIES
OF USERS
In Public Library Kruševac we have statistic when and how do users interact
with digital collection
The digital materials chacked 71701 in the period between 1 July, 2006. – 1
July, 2007., while noone has in person appeared in the NBKS had
requested this type of materials
The statistic shows that the preview of these materials was intensified over
the weekends, Saturday afternoon and Sunday, when the library is closed.
The users are from the Europe Union, former Yugoslav Republics and the
USA
The Library managed to break the objective barriers between the
documents and the users in the other end of the world
We managed to give an information right to his computer, desk thousands
of kilometers far from the information source. This combination of sources
and services expanded the Library services
COASTS
It is particularly difficult to separate costs into the
coast of becoming digital, and the ongoing coast
of remaining digital
Digital libraries like all other libraries, have coast
that must be paid. In addition to the familiar
coast of providing services, digital libraries
assume a responsibility to serve as portal for
their complex communities of users and to the
exponentially expanding resources of the World
Wide Web
