How the Telephone
Was Invented
Do you have a telephone in your home? Who uses it? Do you use it ?
Today, most of us have telephones in our homes. One hundred and
twenty years ago ,people were not so lucky.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. He was very
interested in how human beings make and hear sounds because he
taught deaf people. He learnt about how the human ear hears sounds
and began to experiment with sending sounds.
Book p.3
In those days, people sent messages by telegraph.
At that time, telegraph messages could only be
sent one at time. Bell improved the way telegraph
Messages could be sent down one wire at time.
Bell experimented some more and invented a
microphone that could send sounds down a wire .
Then, he invented a receiver that could collect
incoming sounds. These became the two main
parts of a telephone.
Book p.3
One day, Bell called out to his assistant over the
microphone, “Mr.Watson, come here !I need your
help !”
At that time, Mr.Watson was on a different
floor of the building. But he heard Bell’s voice
clearly over the new device. He ran to help
Bell and to tell him the good news.
Bell had invented the first telephone, It was
10th March 1876.
Book p.4
Mary remembered that her cousin,
Angel was doing a project on
inventors. She decided to share the
information she read with Angel.
Complete Mary’s e-mail below with
suitable words from the text on
pages 2-3.
Hi, Angel,
I read a book yesterday about the invention of the telephone and I
think it might be useful for your project. Here if a summary of the
information.
In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented (1) telephone. He was a
teacher who taught (2) deaf people how to speak. He also learnt
how human beings make (3) sounds and how we hear them.
In those days, people used to send long—distance messages one
at a time by telegraph. Bell’s first invention allowed (4) many
messages to be sent down one wire at the same time.
Later, he made a (5) microphone that could send sounds down a
wire . Then, he made a (6) receiver that could collect sounds from a
wire. Thanks to Bell, we can talk to anyone in the word just by
dialling a few numbers.
Hope the information helps.
Love,
Mary
