Section 2
France Under Louis XIV
Problems in France
1560’s to the 1590’s
• Religious Strife – Catholic versus the Protestants called
Huguenots.
• Peace eventually comes through the leadership of
Henry IV and the Edict of Nantes, which grants
religious toleration in 1598 to the Huguenots.
• Cardinal Richelieu strengthens royal authority after the
assassination of Henry IV. (Louis XIII was only nine
when he became king, but later names Richelieu chief
minister)
• Fronde – uprising of French nobles, merchants,
peasants, and urban poor to protest royal power that
took place when Louis XIV became king at 5 (1643).
Nobles, Merchants, Peasants, Urban
Poor
You are going to split into four groups (each
representing one of the four groups above).
You are going to make a list of the things Louis
XIV did during his reign (ex. not calling a
meeting of the Estates General during his reign)
and decide whether that is an advantage or
disadvantage to your social class.
You are going to decide if you should start an
uprising similar to the Fronde uprising. However,
ALL groups have to agree on whether or not to
revolt.
