Nuclear Education in Egypt
Prof. Dr. Mohamed ElSayed Soliman Nagy
Department of Nuclear and Radiation
Engineering
Alexandria University
The Department of Nuclear and
Radiation Engineering
• The Department of Nuclear Engineering
was established in 1963 to support the
nuclear program in Egypt.
• The courses in the department were
tailored towards creating an engineer with
comprehensive understanding of the
nuclear power plants.
• In 2003, the department's name was
changed to the Department of Nuclear and
Radiation Engineering in order to
accommodate the need for engineers who
can handle radiation sources and
applications in
commercial/industrial/medical fields.
Degrees Granted by the
Department
• the Department of Nuclear and Radiation
Engineering has granted
– over 900 B.Sc. degrees
– more than 130 M.S.
– More than 45 Ph.D. degrees
– Diploma of Nuclear Power Stations and their
Safety
– Diploma of Radiation and Environment

Current Status of the Department
• We have a current student enrollment of
about 100 undergraduates and 40
graduates.
• The department's strengths include faculty
staff with diverse research experiences
and close ties with the Egyptian Atomic
Energy Authority (EAEA) and the Nuclear
Power Plant Authority (NPPA).
