Question 3 – Season Tickets
Brighton and Hove Albion supporters can buy season tickets for all the home games. This
means they buy one ticket for the whole season and don’t have to buy a ticket each week
there is a home game.
The costs of season tickets are;
Adult Season ticket
South Stand is £475
North Stand is £546
Junior (under 16) Season Ticket
South Stand £275
North Stand £325
Non Season ticket prices
(South Stand and North Stand Junior £15) (South Stand and North Stand Adult £24.50)
Brighton and Hove Albion are going to play 23 Home games in the league this season.
When you buy a season ticket, you are paying upfront for a seat at each of the 23 games.
If you buy a junior season ticket for the South Stand at £275, how much on average
are you paying to see each home game?
You are a junior who hasn’t bought a season ticket. You want to attend all the home
games and sit in the south stand. How much will it cost you?
How much money does a junior season ticket holder save, compared to a junior nonseason ticket holder?
If Sam was a junior season ticket holder and his friend John wasn’t, how many games
could John go and watch with Sam in the south stand for £275?
How many games would John miss?

Question 4 - Family Day out at the Withdean
Sarah recently won £100 through her premium bonds. As a treat for her family, she
decided to take her brother, mum and dad to watch Brighton and Hove Albion play Leeds
United.
Sarah wanted to plan the day all by herself, but didn’t know just how far her £100 would go.
She listed the costs;
2 junior south stand tickets £15 each
2 adult south stand tickets £24.50 each
2 junior return tickets from Shoreham to Brighton train station £2.80 each
2 adult return tickets from Shoreham to Brighton train station £3.20 each
She knew she could then get the park and ride bus to the Withdean for free, using the
coupon on the match ticket.
How much had she spent before entering the ground?
Extension Activity
Sarah paid £3.20 for each adult on the bus and £2.80 for herself and her brother.
Look on www.buses.co.uk and see if she could have made any further savings
here. (See Young People offers)
How much does Sarah have left from her £100?
Due to the high cost of a family day out, Sarah decides to look on the club’s website to see
whether there is a family discount or promotion.
Sarah finds a better deal in the family stand.
1 adult + 1 under 16 for £28.00. She decides to book 2 family deals.
Add up the new cost of the tickets and work out how much money she has saved.
www.pfeg.org/learningaboutmoney
continued…
Now add the cost of travelling to the game to the new ticket price.
How much money does Sarah have left from her original £100?
Sarah decides to treat herself and her brother to something from the club shop. She
decides that she can spare £10 between them and still hopefully have enough money to
go to the burger bar at half time.
Look on the club website www.seagulls.co.uk and decide what 2 items Sarah and
her brother bought for less than £10. When you have got the two item prices, take
the total away from the money you have left.
For example: I bought;
Inflatable hand £2.99
Flag on a stick £5.99
At half time, Sarah decides to take her brother to the fast food stand and use some of the
remaining money to get a burger, chips and a soft drink. She also bought her mum and
dad a Mars bar and a coffee.
Using the menu below, add up the total cost of Sarah’s family food and drink order.
Menu
Soft drinks £1.50
Mars Bars £.50
Burger and Chips £3.50
Coffee £1.20
Sausage and Chips £3.50
Tea £1.20
After arriving home, Sarah looked in her purse. How much money did she have
left?

Question 5 – Travelling To A Game
Away fixture - Leeds v Brighton and Hove Albion
Jack and Lee are going to a Brighton and Hove Albion away game in Leeds. They have
decided the cheapest way to get there is to drive. On the AA Route Finder website it says
that Leeds United’s ground is 413km away from Brighton. The boys want to get there 30
minutes before kick off to watch some of the warm up. Kick off is at 15.00 hours.
What time do the boys need to leave Brighton?

The boys found driving all the way up to Leeds very tiring and decided the next away
game they go to should be half the driving time.
Can you suggest a game that would take the boys approximately half the time to
drive to?
A few weeks later the boys have the opportunity to go to an evening cup match away at
Gillingham. The boys check the AA route planner and it suggests that it will take 1 hour
29 minutes to get to the ground.
The kick off is at 19.45. The boys again want to get there 30 minutes before kick off.
What time should the boys leave to arrive 30 minutes before kick off?
Half way through the journey the boys realise they are going to be late. They have
travelled approximately 57km and it has already taken them one hour.
Unfortunately the boys had not planned for rush hour traffic and the roads are much
busier in the evening at this time.
The boys eventually got to the game at 19.59. How many minutes of the game had
they missed?
How many minutes later than expected had they arrived? (Think about what time
they wanted to arrive)

Sammy and Tammy are trying to work out how much petrol money they need to take in
order to get to the above away fixtures.
They have worked out that it costs 11pence per km.
Can you complete the column in the table to show how much it will cost to travel
to each of the away fixtures by car? Please show you answers in £’s.
In which fixture does it cost approximately 5 times the amount of petrol money it
takes to travel to Millwall FC?
Which fixture costs approximately double the cost of the trip to Gillingham FC?
What two fixture costs added together are 95pence cheaper than travelling to
Oldham?
Extension Activity
What about a more environmentally way of traveling on the train?
Using the internet and the destination chart above, work out the standard fares to the
different destinations. Is it cheaper to take the train or drive? Are there any offers
available for use on the train?

Question 7 – Club Finance and Salaries
Clubs without billionaire owners sometimes have trouble making enough money to pay
players wages. Clubs make money in many different ways.
Brainstorm as a class a few of the ways clubs generate an income before answering the
questions below.
Brighton and Hove Albion don’t have a billionaire owner. The owner of the club relies on
the supporters buying tickets and merchandise from the club shop to support a large part
of the players’ wages.
On average the 15 players in the first team squad are paid £2,500 a week?
What is the weekly wage bill for the chairman for the Albion’s first team squad?
What is the monthly wage bill for the first team squad if we assume there are four
weeks in a month?
Brighton will on average have two home games per month. The average ticket price is
£20. In order to pay the first team squads’ wages, how many tickets will they need
to sell per month to cover the costs?
The capacity of the Withdean stadium is 8,850. To cover monthly wages, they only need
to sell 7,500 seats. On average; Brighton and Hove Albion sell 5,244 seats per home
game.
How much money do they accumulate on average per month to cover wages?
How much money do they have over each month to cover the other running costs
of the football club?
Extension Activity
List as many other costs as you can think of that have to be covered by
BHAFC.
As we have already stated; players in the Albion’s first team are paid on average £2,500
per week. How much money before tax are they paid in a year?
www.pfeg.org/learningaboutmoney
Continued…
Without using a calculator, work out the total amount of money they have to pay in
tax if they have to pay 40% tax.
How much money are the players left with after tax per month?
After players have paid tax, they have to pay something called National Insurance. This
is something all people who earn an income have to pay. Originally it was set up to pay
for pensions and the National Health Service. On average people contribute 10% of their
monthly earnings.
How much does an Albion first team player have to pay a month in National
Insurance?
Question 8 – Player Transfers
In January and August clubs are allowed to buy and sell players. These are called
transfers. When a player is sold a figure is agreed between the two clubs involved.
Transfers can be quite complicated because many people become involved in the process
and the fee agreed is broken down and shared out.
When Nicholas Anelka recently moved from Bolton to Chelsea a fee of £15 million was
agreed. The money did not simply move from Chelsea’s bank account to Bolton’s.
When a transfer is agreed, Agents, Players, Lawyers and the Club all get a %.

cricket club take from these ticket sales alone?
Question 11 - Supporting Sussex
Jim is a Sussex season ticket holder, which costs him £350. He goes to watch every
home game over at Hove and gets there by bus. During the season between April and
September he attends 8 league matches (4 days each). It costs Jim £3.20 to get a day
saver every day travelling on the bus.
How much does it cost Jim to travel by bus each day to all of the games?
Each day he is at the match he buys 2 cups of tea and a sandwich. Cups of tea cost
50p and a sandwich costs £2.50.

Question 12 - Travelling to a game
Sussex Cricket Club play teams in the leagues all around the country, from Surrey
and Hampshire to Durham and Yorkshire.
From Sussex to Yorkshire it is 450 miles.
Tom and his dad decided to drive and go and watch Sussex play away against
Yorkshire.
They filled up their car with petrol and it cost £55. They made it to Yorkshire and
before they came home they had to put another £30 in to make sure they had
enough. After Tom’s dad re-filled the car, he estimated it had cost him £80 to drive to
Yorkshire and back.
How much did it cost him per mile?

Question 15 - Making Money
Compared to other cricket clubs across the country, Sussex isn’t one of the
richest. They have to think of as many different ways to make money as they
can. Apart from selling tickets, think of different ways that the cricket club
could make money.
The club have a number of ways of making revenue, including advertising
hoardings, club shop, bar and refreshment stalls around the ground and
hiring out facilities around the ground.
There is space for 200 advertising hoardings. The club charge a company
£1000 to buy one to advertise for a season.
If the club sold all of their hoardings how much would the club make
from the advertising hoardings?
Apart from league games Sussex play in 3 other tournaments. For these
tournaments they split the fixtures home and away. For Sussex’s home
games they have on average crowds of 4,300 and sell tickets at an average
price of £14.
On average how much are the takings from a home tournament game?
At home they play 4 Twenty20 games, 4 FP Trophy games and 4 Pro40
games.
How much would they take on tickets from all of their home tournment
games?

Question 16 - Players Wages
Sussex CCC have 19 first team squad players. The club has to pay the
wages of all of these players and on average the weekly wage bill for a
player is £3,000.
What is the weekly players’ wage bill for the Chief Executive of
SCCC?
Although the cricket season only lasts for 5 months the club still have to
pay the players for the whole year.

Brighton and Hove Playing for Success have written these numeracy questions to
complement the What Money Means (WMM) project, which is currently running in the city.
WMM, a project funded by HSBC bank and managed by the Personal Finance Education
Group (‘pfeg’), is aimed at developing financial literacy in primary schools.
The questions explore a variety of financial topics related to the Sussex County Cricket Club
and Brighton and Hove Albion football club. There are questions related to ticket sales,
purchasing new players, players’ salaries and PAYE and National Insurance and many other
topics with a financial aspect to them. The questions could be used to complement a Finance
Day or Finance Week. Alternatively, they could be used simply to improve Maths performance
by presenting the subject in a real life scenario. It is important to include discussion on the
topics raised in order that children learn how the world of business finance works and to be
able to develop the skills needed to make informed financial decisions.
Questions are aimed at Level 4 and are intended as 10 minute word problems using
calculators for the most part, although some are longer. The pupil booklet was planned to be
used as a text book and the CDRom allows teachers to print off individual questions or to
display them on an interactive whiteboard.
The Playing for Success teachers are happy to come into school to support learning or,
alternatively, children could visit the Withdean Stadium or the County Cricket ground to solve
the problems on site.

The boys found driving all the way up to Leeds very tiring and decided the next away
game they go to should be half the driving time.
Can you suggest a game that would take the boys approximately half the time to
drive to?
Bournemouth 2 hours 7 minutes
A few weeks later the boys have the opportunity to go to an evening cup match away at
Gillingham. The boys check the AA route planner and it suggests that it will take 1 hour
29 minutes to get to the ground.
The kick off is at 19.45. The boys again want to get there 30 minutes before kick off.
What time should the boys leave to arrive 30 minutes before kick off?
19.45 - 30 minutes= 19.15 arrival time
19.15 – 29 minutes = 18.46 – 1 hour 29 minutes = 17.46pm leave time
Half way through the journey the boys realise they are going to be late. They have
travelled approximately 57km and it has already taken them one hour.
Unfortunately the boys had not planned for rush hour traffic and the roads are much
busier in the evening at this time.
The boys eventually got to the game at 19.59. How many minutes of the game had
they missed?
19.59 – 19.45 = 14 minutes

What two fixture costs added together are 95pence cheaper than traveling to
Oldham?

Question 7 – Club Finance and Salaries
Clubs without billionaire owners sometimes have trouble making enough money to pay
players wages. Clubs make money in many different ways.
Brainstorm as a class a few of the ways clubs generate an income before answering the
questions below.
Brighton and Hove Albion don’t have a billionaire owner. The owner of the club relies on
the supporters buying tickets and merchandise from the club shop to support a large part
of the player’s wages.
On average the 15 players in the first team squad are paid £2,500 a week?
What is the weekly wage bill for the chairman for the Albion’s first team squad?
15 x £2,500 = £37,500 per week
What is the monthly wage bill for the first team squad if we assume there are four
weeks in a month?
£37,500 x 4 = £150,000
Brighton will on average have two home games per month. The average ticket price is
£20. In order to pay the first team squads’ wages, how many tickets will they need
to sell per month to cover the costs?
£150,000 / £20 = 7,500
The capacity of the Withdean stadium is 8,850. To cover monthly wages, they only need
to sell 7,500 seats. On average; Brighton and Hove Albion sell 5,244 seats per home
game.
How much money do they accumulate on average per month to cover wages?
£20 x 5,244 = £104,880 x 2 = £209,760
How much money do they have over each month to cover the other running costs
of the football club?
£209,760 - £150,000 = £59,760
Extension Activity
List as many other costs as you can think of that have to be covered
by BHAFC.
Other wage bills, water, gas, electricity, vandalism costs, turf maintenance, policing.
As we have already stated; players in the Albion’s first team are paid on average £2,500
per week. How much money before tax are they paid in a year?
£2,500 x 52 = £130,000
www.pfeg.org/learningaboutmoney

Without using a calculator, work out the total amount of money they have to pay in
tax if they have to pay 40% tax.
£130,000
10% = 13,000 x 4 = £52,000
How much money are the players left with after tax per month?
£130,000 - £52,000 = £78,000
£78,000 / 12 = £6,500 per month
After players have paid tax, they have to pay something called National Insurance. This
is something all people who earn an income have to pay. Originally it was set up to pay
for pensions and the National Health Service. On average people contribute 10% of their
monthly earnings.
How much does an Albion first team player have to pay a month in National
Insurance?
10% of £6,500= £650
Question 8 – Player Transfers
In January and August clubs are allowed to buy and sell players. These are called
transfers. When a player is sold a figure is agreed between the two clubs involved.
Transfers can be quite complicated because many people become involved in the process
and the fee agreed is broken down and shared out.
When Nicholas Anelka recently moved from Bolton to Chelsea a fee of £15 million was
agreed. The money did not simply move from Chelsea’s bank account to Bolton’s.
When a transfer is agreed, Agents, Players, Lawyers and the Club all get a %.

Question 10 - Season Tickets
Adult season tickets cost £350 and junior season tickets cost £50.
If Sussex sell 1,200 adult season tickets and 300 juniors ones, how much does
the cricket club take from season tickets alone?
1200 x £350= £420,000
300 x £50= £15,000
£420,000 + £15,000= £435,000
If there is a crowd of 4,256 and all the season ticket holders attend, how
many non-season ticket holders attend?
4,256 – 1200 – 300= 2,756
If the price of a non-season ticket holder averages at £14, how much will the
cricket club take from these ticket sales alone?
2,756 x £14= £38,584
Question 11 - Supporting Sussex
Jim is a Sussex season ticket holder, which costs him £350. He goes to watch every
home game over at Hove and gets there by bus. During the season between April and
September he attends 8 league matches (4 days each). It costs Jim £3.20 to get a day
saver every day travelling on the bus.
How much does it cost Jim to travel by bus each day to all of the games?
8 x 4 x £3.20= £102.40
Each day he is at the match he buys 2 cups of tea and a sandwich. Cups of tea cost
50p and a sandwich costs £2.50.
How much does it cost him to do this for all the games he attends?
2 x 50p= £1
£1 + £2.50 = £3.50
£3.50 x 4 x 8= £112
Overall how much does it cost Jim to enjoy his time at the cricket, including
season ticket, travel and refreshments.
£350 + £102.40 + £112 = £564.40

Question 15 - Making Money
Compared to other cricket clubs across the country, Sussex isn’t one of the
richest. They have to think of as many different ways to make money as they
can. Apart from selling tickets, think of different ways that the cricket club
could make money.
The club have a number of ways of making revenue, including advertising
hoardings, club shop, bar and refreshment stalls around the ground and
hiring out facilities around the ground.

tournaments they split the fixtures home and away. For Sussex’s home
games they have on average crowds of 4,300 and sell tickets at an average
price of £14.
On average how much are the takings from a home tournament game?
4,300 x £14= £60,200
At home they play 4 Twenty20 games, 4 FP Trophy games and 4 Pro40
games.
How much would they take on tickets from all of their home tournment
games?
£60,200 x 12= £722,400

£57,000 x 52= £2,964,000
Looking at individual players, work out how much an individual
player would get paid in a year.
£3,000 x 52= £156,000
The players have to pay 40% tax on this. How much tax do they pay?
10% of £156,000= £15,600 x 4= 40% =£62,400
How much are they left with after tax?
£156,000 - £62,400= £93,600
They also have to pay National Insurance on their pay, on average
10%. How much National Insurance do they pay?
10% of £93,600= £9,360
How much do they have left after paying National Insurance?
£93,600 - £9,360= £84,240
