What is Plagiarism?
Verbatim copying without using quotation marks
Not using in-text or reference list citations to attribute
quotations to the original author
Paraphrasing or summarizing other works without using intext or reference list citations to attribute the paraphrased
material to the original author
Copying information from the web without citing the author
Quoting and paraphrasing a large portion of others' works so
that the wording is too close to the original and without adding
critical analysis; no new contribution to knowledge
Making errors in the reference citations so that the original
source of information cannot be checked
Using fictitious references so that your project appears to be
well-researched
Having someone else write the paper
Common Terms
Common Knowledge
Basic information that is considered to be known by many
people; no need to cite.
Example: Lansing is the capital of Michigan.
Quotation
Text using someone else’s words; keep short; use quotation
marks; must cite.
Example: "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a
follower." (The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs, 2010)
Paraphrase
Your text using someone else’s ideas; writing in your own
words; must cite.
How to Avoid Plagiarism

Can more challenging for people with English as a second
language
Must add your own ideas to the paper
