WSB/DPM 2007 – VSS Enabled Guests
1. Host talks to VSS
Writers on Guests

WSB/DPM 2007 – Non-VSS Guests
1. Suspend Guest OS
NT 4.0
2. Snap Host Disk with
VSS
3. Resume Guest OS
4. Backup Snapped

Host Level Backups: Advantages
• Backup is Comprehensive
– Bare Metal Recovery
– Virtual Networks not included
• Licensing Costs
– WSB Free Though
• Single Solution for all OS’s
• Simple(ish)
Host Level Backups: Disadvantages
• Natively No Restore Granularity
• Natively Does Not Support Multiple Snapshots
• Guest will enter Saved State If:
– No VSS Support (Windows 2000, NT, NonWindows)
– Integration Services not installed
– Volume Backup Component disabled
• Be Aware of Non-VSS Aware Apps (eg Oracle)
• Guest can not use dynamic disks
Enable Hyper-V VSS Backup

Windows Server Backup: Hyper-V Restore
DPM 2007 Advantages
• VM Level Restore Granularity
• Integrated Physical/Guest Level/Host Level
Solution
• Server Management Suite
– License for every OS on a physical machine:
•
•
•
•
Operations Manager
Configuration Manager
Data Protection Manager
Virtual Machine Manager
DPM 2010 & Hyper-V R2
• Restore VM’s to Alternate Hosts
• Individual file-item restore
– Files only though, SQL/Exchange/etc not covered
