Cook
Part 1: What’s cooking
Engage, elicit and explore sections
A teaching sequence from the
Cook! unit of upd8 wikid, the online 11-14 curriculum from upd8
Untrialled version 1.0 May 2008
This activity is at ‘beta’ stage, for trialling and evaluation
purposes only. It may need some modifications to work
fully in the classroom.
Please look out for revised version 2.0, available from
www.upd8.org.uk

Highlights of this sequence
•Approaches familiar physics through an involving narrative
of celebrity chefs heating food
•Assesses understanding in a real context – students explain
cooking methods using particles
•Exploratory,‘constructivist’ practical work
•Practises How Science Works skill of using scientific models

7E Learning cycle : What’s Cooking
ENGAGE
EXTEND
[Apply ideas about
heat transfer to
different contexts.]
ELABORATE
Students become Ally
a trainee chef at
Gastro Heaven.
EVALUATE
The chefs test Ally’s
understanding of the
processes that make
food hot - AfL
Gordo has Ally apply
his ‘secrets’ about
energy transfer to
cooking processes
ELICIT
The boss, Gordo,
finds out if Ally knows
how food gets hot
and cooks.
EXPLORE
Ally forms her own
ideas about heat
transfer to learn
Gordo’s secrets
Jimella models the
heat transfer
processes for Ally

I’m Gordo
– I’m the boss. I hear you’re the
new trainee. You’d better be a fast
learner – my restaurant’s got 3
Michelins. And I bet you think
I’m talking about tyres.
Have you
got any idea how
to cook?
2
Wow! Look at that
wonderful food.
I’ve no idea how
you prepared it.

OK. Your first test –
you’d better get it right. Let’s see
what you know about food. See these
crazy menu items? Tell me which belong
on a plate, and which belong in the bin?
And then re-arrange the crazy menu
items to give a better menu.

Your cooking ideas

see if a week in our gastro
laboratory can teach you how food
gets hot Jimella will look
after you.
Hi Ally.
You need to work hard
at this to find out what IS
cooking..

saw, sort out which
of Gordo’s secrets
apply to each
activity.
Do what it says
– and think carefully
how the heat energy travels.
Work in groups then compare
theories. You’ve got to know
all about Gordo’s
secrets.

This shows
all three of Gordo’s
secrets. But which
is which?
b) Gauze heating – how close can you
feel the heating when you put your
hand at the side of the flame? Then
put the Bunsen under a gauze on a
tripod, let it heat up. Again how close
at the side can you feel the heating?
c) Bench heat – feel how far the
heat travels through the
bench below the bunsen.
