Marriage A Permanent Institution Home: Divine Origin For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24) And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6) Marriage: A Permanent Institution Home: Basic Unit of Society Not parallel to the church Church is blood-bought body – Spiritual relationship Salvation found in Christ and saved souls are in the church Home: human relationships Divorce: Destroying the Home Why Are There So Many Divorces? Why Are There So Many Divorces? 1. Lack of Faith in God! In the beginning God… (Genesis 1:1). Messages sent to children: They are the product of evolution. They are the center of the universe – Humanism. TV and other entertainment mediums – Discovery Channel, Disney, National Geographic, not to mention cartoons and other children’s programming, systematically teach that we are simply here by chance. Schools teach the theory of evolution, reinforcing the seeds planted by experienced and well-financed humanists in the entertainment industry. • Man’s attitude toward the animals. • Man’s attitude toward the environment (i.e., global warming, ecology, use of raw materials). Why Are There So Many Divorces? 1. Lack of Faith in God! In the beginning God… (Genesis 1:1). Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. (Heb. 3:12). God…in these last days has spoken to us in His Son… (Heb. 1:1-2). But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery (Matt. 5:32). Ground Children in the Faith – Rom. 10:17 When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Tim. 1:5). But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 3:14-15). When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed- Better not to vow than to vow and not pay (Eccl. 5:4-5). 2. Adultery & Fornication! Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body (1 Cor. 6:18). But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks (Eph. 5:3-4). Abraham & Hagar Samson & Delilah David & Bathsheba Amnon & Tamar Solomon & Foreign Women Ahab & Jezebel God Declares Adultery & Fornication Sinful! Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals…will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you… (1 Cor. 6:9-11). Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness (Gal. 5:19). Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry (Col. 3:5). For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (2 Cor. 5:10). 3. Immodest Dress And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart (Prov. 7:10). In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works (1 Tim. 2:9-10). You shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs. (Ex. 28:42). …Remove your veil, Take off the skirt, Uncover the thigh, Pass through the rivers. Your nakedness shall be uncovered, Yes, your shame will be seen; I will take vengeance, And I will not arbitrate with a man (Isa. 47:2-3). 4. Alcohol and Drugs For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles--when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries (1 Peter 4:3). Drunkenness – oinophlugia – overflowing of wine Revelries – komos – carousing; partying in honor of Bacchus (Roman god of wine & intoxication) Drinking Parties – potos - a drinking bout; an act of drinking; forbidding Christians gathering to drink alcohol Woe to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk So as to look on their nakedness! (Habakkuk 2:15). 5. Fussing and Fighting But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another (Gal. 5:15). I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us (3 John 9). A spirit of Diotrophes does not belong in the home! Submitting to one another in the fear of God (Eph. 5:21). For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults… (2 Cor. 12:20). Idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies… (Gal. 5:20). Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. (Eph. 4:31-32). Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets (Matt. 7:12). 6. Dance Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness (Gal.5:19). But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matt. 5:28). 7. TV, Movies, Entertainment Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life (Prov. 4:23). Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life (Prov. 4:23). 8. Materialism: High Standard of Living Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows (1 Tim. 6:6-10). Standards Determined by the Authority Recognized… No Respect for God – No Respect for His Law on Marriage! But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. “For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” (Malachi 2:15-16). …Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate. (Matt. 19:6).
