What is ENUM?
•
Based on Domain Name System (DNS)
– Same as internet domain names
•
DNS service:
1.
2.
3.
4.
•
User types in domain (key) into browser etc
DNS lookup performed
Lookup yields onward routing information
Information for mail delivery, website etc
In ENUM
– Telephone number is used as key

Internet
How does ENUM work?
• tElephone NUmber Mapping
• Electronic Numbering
• Protocol defined by IETF (RFC3761)
• ENUM is a means to map telephone numbers to internet
addresses
• Uses well established Domain Name System
• IENUM Limited launched commercial Irish ENUM service
in May 2007
How does ENUM work?
•
An ENUM lookup has two components
1. Telephone number conversion to domain :
•
+353-1-2365409 becomes :– 35312365409
– 3.5.3.1.2.3.6.5.4.0.9
– 9.0.4.5.6.3.2.1.3.5.3
•
9.0.4.5.6.3.2.1.3.5.3.e164.arpa
This domain is then used as a key to lookup internet
services/addresses
2. Query for NAPTR RR in DNS:•
•
•
NAPTR format similar to MX record, order & preference fields
NAPTR payload can contain SIP addr, email addr etc
All done in software

•
Versatile – easy to introduce new applications
•
Tech-speak: An application of the DNS to refer from E.164 numbers to URIs, and make
those references available via DNS resource records
ENUM is
•
–
–
–
•
NOT a Voice over IP protocol like SIP or H.323
