7.1 Searching Intersections
Intersections
The chances of a collision are greater at intersections than any
other point on a roadway
Intersections are dangerous because many drivers paths cross
there
About 40% of all collisions and 25% of all fatal collisions take
place at intersections
7.1 Searching Intersections
Clues to identifying intersections
Street signs and street lights
Parked cars on cross streets
Rows of fences and mailboxes
Power lines
7.2 Controlled Intersections
Definition – An intersection that has signs or signals assigning
the right of way
What to do – Use the IPDE process when approaching an
intersection. Proceed only when you are certain your
intended path of travel is clear
7.2 Controlled Intersections
Stale Green Light
Definition – A light that has been green since you notice it.
What to do – Predict that it will change to yellow soon
Fresh Green Light
Definition – Light that has just changed from red to green
What to do – check to make sure intersection is clear before
proceeding
7.2 Controlled Intersections
Unprotected Left Turn
Definition – No special turn light for the left turn
What to do –You must yield to oncoming traffic
Protected Left Turn
Definition – A special left-turn, green arrow, or delayed green
light lets you turn left while oncoming traffic is stopped
What to do – Proceed cautiously while checking for traffic

7.3 Uncontrolled Intersections
Definition – an intersection that does not have signs or lights
to regulate traffic
What to do – slow down when approaching an uncontrolled
intersection then look left first then right. You cross the path
of vehicles from the left first.
7.4 Determining the Right of Way
Definition – privilege of having immediate use of a certain
part of the roadway
Situations when you must yield
Yield at stop signs (to whom)
Yield at fresh green light (to whom)
Yield from an alley, driveway or private road
Yield at all yield signs
Yield to emergency vehicles
Yield when turning left at any intersection (to whom)
Yield at four-way stops (to whom)
Yield at uncontrolled intersections

7.4 Determining Right of Way and
Judging Gaps
Judging the size of a gap
Gap – the distance between vehicles
Crossing two lanes of traffic takes 4 – 5 seconds
Turning right and accelerating to 30mph takes 6 seconds
Turning left and accelerating to 30mph takes 7 seconds
Crossing and Joining Traffic
A left turn is more dangerous than a right turn. Why?
