Re: Changes to Graduation Requirements
In October, BESE approved for Notice of Intent several changes to Bulletin 741:
Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators. The changes are primarily related to
graduation requirements. This is the first year that students will be graduating under the
LA Core 4 curriculum and the Basic Core curriculum. Most of these changes are the
result of requests from schools and districts and they provide more options for students.
It is expected that BESE will approve this changes for final adoption in March which
means they will affect students graduating in 2012. The changes are summarized below
and the revised policy is attached.







Addition of AP Calculus BC to the Mathematics Program of Studies for public
and nonpublic schools
Clarification of the policy allowing IBC courses to be substituted for certain
requirements in the LA Core 4
Revision allowing the use of ½ credits to satisfy the arts requirement for the LA
Core 4
Addition of the NOCCA course substitutions for the LA Core 4
Inclusion of the transfer policy in the assessment policy for academic and
career/technical endorsements
Addition of Japanese, Hebrew, and Arabic to the foreign language program of
studies for public and nonpublic schools
Removal of the limit on the number of journalism courses students can take for
public and nonpublic schools
