GENRE
Teacher’s Definition- The major category into which a literary work fits. The basic
divisions of literature are prose, poetry, and drama.
My Definition- Genre is the broad term for a class or category of any type of artistic or
literary work.

-This book is a classic of the mystery genre.

HOMILY
Teacher’s Definition- This terms literally means “sermon”, but more informally, it can
include any serious talk, speech, or lecture involving moral or spiritual advice.
My Definition- Homily is most commonly referred to as, or used in place of a short
“sermon”; however, many people use it to describe a speech dealing with a moral
theme.
EXAMPLES…
-Shakespeare refers to homilies in As You Like Itwhen Rosalind comments on the
verses Celia is reading :
O most gentle pulpiter! What tedious homily of love have you wearied your
parishioners withal, and never cried “Have patience, good people”!

HYPERBOLE
Teacher’s Definition- A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or
overstatement.
My Definition-Exaggerating something to the extreme intentionally. Hyperbole is
usually used in literary works, and when used as a figure of speech, it is not
meant to be taken literally. It is also similar to metaphors and similes by
comparing things.

-“I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.”

IMAGERY
Teacher’s Definition- The sensory details or figurative language used to describe,
arouse emotion, or represent abstractions.
My Definition- The use of figurative language to describe visual imagery for the reader
to imagine mentally. It generally appeals to the five senses.

-The movie was full of biblical imagery.

INFERENCE/INFER
Teacher’s Definition- To draw a reasonable conclusion from the information
presented.
My Definition- The process of deriving a conclusion based upon information or facts
given.

-When you see that the sky is gray, you can infer that it is likely to rain while in the
observation.
