Researchers in the Artemis Project at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children
used big data strategies to track babies’ vital signs and discovered that
changes in a baby’s heart rate (amongst other things) can indicate
infection prior to any other signs or symptoms—an early warning that can
have life-saving implications.
“When you think about the fact that there is 7,000 heart
beats per hour, and more than 2,000 breaths in the hour,
then you can start to see that there is a lot of data to a
baby.”
Changes in heart rate, breathing and blood pressure in the earliest stages of
infection are flagged, allowing physicians to spot early warnings and administer
antibiotics sooner.
