Background: The United Nations (UN) Commission
on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and
Children
• The Commission was set up in response to the call in the
UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and
Children’s Health
• For increasing access to and appropriate use of
medicines, medical devices and health supplies
• To effectively address leading avoidable causes of death
during pregnancy, childbirth and childhood
• The Commission identified 13 essential commodities that
could save the lives of millions of women and children
• Made 10 recommendations for how to get these
commodities to those who need them most. Among the
49 Every Woman Every Child initiative countries
The Commission’s recommendations support clear objectives for underutilized life-saving commodities across the RMNCH Continuum of care
