“Begun in 2007, this is a six-year partnership
between Kentucky Science and Technology
Corporation (KSTC) and the National Math and
Science Initiative (NMSI). Under conditions of
matching over the six years, NMSI has
committed $13.2 million to AdvanceKentucky
through funding from Exxon Mobil Corporation
and the Dell and Gates Foundations.”

The ACHS Story


In the 2003 – 2004 school year, we
offered 8 AP courses: Calculus AB, Biology,
English Literature, US History, European
History, Art Drawing, and on alternate
years, French and Spanish.
In 2004, 108 AP exams were taken with
34 qualifying scores.

Year One



In the 2008 – 2009 school year we offered 15
AP courses: US History, Art Drawing, Art 2D
Design, Biology, Chemistry, English Language,
English Literature, French, Spanish, Calculus AB,
Music Theory, Physics, Psychology, Statistics,
and World History.
In 2009, 227 total AP exams were taken with
110 qualifying scores.
In 2009 we had 187 total student selections in
MSE AP classes with 74 qualifying scores
surpassing our year 2 goal.
Year Two


In 2009-10 we are offering 16 AP courses:
English Literature, English Language, Calculus
AB, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Environmental Science, Economics, US History,
World History, European History, Music Theory,
AP Art Drawing, AP 2-D Design, and AP Spanish.
AP French is offered every other year.
We have 558 total student selections in AP
classes with 343 student selections in math,
science, and English courses.
Year Two


As we are planning the full
implementation of the Laying the
Foundation system, we are working with
the middle school on using this program
for their pre-AP courses.

Why ACHS Tried NMSI?



The Superintendent wanted us to get the
grant.
I was skeptical until learning that 97% of
students at the Texas school took at least
one AP class before they graduated.
At ACHS, our goal is for every student to
take at least one AP or college level class
before graduation.

Any Issues?

Stipends for teachers cause a few issues
to overcome.


With teaming at the middle school – “Why
should I change what I am doing so you can
make a lot of money.”
The administrator stipend is going into a
professional development account that will
support all AP classes.

Trying to find funding to replicate the
NMSI program for the non-MSE AP
classes.

are completely unprepared/qualified?

• While representing only 7% of Kentucky’s high school
enrollments
•Increased at 14x the National rate of increase
