Six Decades of Community Library Services
Timberland Regional Library (TRL) was formed in 1968 as an Inter-county
Rural Library District by a vote of the residents of the unincorporated areas
of Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific and Thurston counties.
Today 300 employees serve 485,000 residents across 7,000 square miles
through 27 community libraries, 7 additional service points (partnership
libraries and kiosks) and a heavily accessed website that features e-books,
streaming movies and music, digital magazines and a wide range of research
tools.
From a revenue perspective, almost 90% of TRL’s $21 million budget comes
from property taxes; while 8% is received from timber harvests and nearly
2% from fines. On the expenses side, more than two-thirds (68%) of TRL’s
expenses are staff salaries, while the budget to purchase new library
materials is 16% (above the national average of 12%).
