of First Grade
Parent Night
Presented by Nathan Ingroum, Margo Manke & Jubilee Roth
September 26, 2013
Attendance
•
Learning in first grade is active and hands-on! The school doors open
at 8:45AM. We do have entry tasks for the children to complete upon
arrival. This ensures that the time from 8:45-9:05 is maximized for
learning.
•
Our day begins promptly at 9:05AM and the dismissal time is 3:35PM.
•
If your child is going to be out, please contact the office to let them
know the reason for the absence. Thanks for your help!
Behavior
Every first grade student is expected to
follow the 5 BEEs of Super Behavior:
BEE Respectful
BEE Responsible
BEE Safe
Always BEE Working
BEElieve in Yourself
Curriculum
All Curriculum is CCSS-Common Core State Standards and GLE-Grade Level Expectations Aligned
• ELA including reading, writing and language-Reading Street
• Mathematics-EnVision
• Science-FOSS
•Social Studies-Harcourt Brace
In 1st grade, we will focus on developing
phonemic awareness, decoding skills,word
recognition, comprehension and oral
reading fluency.
•The more sight words a student knows,
the more fluently he/she will read.
•Practice in reading the sight words on a
daily basis will help your child to soar
as a reader!
•A variety of flexible grouping strategies will be utilized to deliver our
reading and language arts curriculum. Whole class and small group lessons will
be delivered to ensure mastery of skills for all students.
•We will focus on the following throughout the year: decoding skills,
comprehension strategies, fluency, vocabulary (amazing words),word analysis,
spelling, grammar, usage, and mechanics, writing, listening and speaking.
*We do lots of writing in first grade! Children are encouraged to use
phonetic spelling. Our goal is to encourage risk taking and independence in
writing. Part of this process is to build their confidence in their ability to
communicate in writing even if they can’t spell the word with “dictionary
spelling.” As high frequency words and spelling rules are introduced children
will gradually move toward more conventional spelling. Please help your child
with writing at home. Ask them to write notes, letters, signs and more!
ALL Math Instruction is based on the CCSS
By the end of first grade, students …
•Understand and use the concept of “ones”&“tens”
•Add and subtract numbers to 20 with ease
•Tell time to the half hour and hour
•Count, write and order numbers to 120+
•Measure with simple units
•Identify and locate shapes in their environment
•Describe data and analyze and solve simple word problems
Science instruction is based on the Washington
State Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)
1st grade students will learn that:
•Weather can be observed, measured and described
•Matter exists in three forms
•Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways
•They will also receive engaging hand-on science
instruction using our FOSS Science Kits.
Differentiated Instruction
In order to provide the best possible instruction to each child we
provided Differentiated Instruction.
• Differentiated Instruction (DI) ensures that each child’s learning
needs are met. Our goal is to challenge every child while ensuring
their mastery of the skills needed for second grade.
• Assessment is frequent and on-going in our classrooms as we
monitor student growth and provide engaging lessons to promote
learning.
Enrichment
All first grade learners at South Ridge are provided with enrichment
via our content specialists. Each week the students will be going to art
with our specialist Ms. Fukuchi. They will attend music twice per week
with Mrs. Whetsell and P.E. twice per week with Mr. Nosler. These
teachers have expertise in these content areas and help us to provide
an enriched learning environment for our students.
Field Trips
We look forward to providing our students with immersion
learning experiences. This year we are planning to go to the
Oregon Zoo. An additional field trip may also be scheduled if
possible. We always need lots of parent volunteers on field
trips too!
Student Learning Goals
•Goals are based on the CCSS in ELA and Math and GLEs in
Science and Social Studies. These standards drive our
instruction and provide a clear roadmap for student learning
expectations.
•In first grade we also work on setting personal learning goals.
Goal setting is a focus in all the elementary grades and
students are challenged in first grade to set and master goals.
Homework
• Each Friday your child will bring home weekly homework.
• Weekly homework will include a reading log, spelling words, math
practice and more. Please encourage your child to read at home on a
daily basis. 20 minutes reading each day can make an immense
difference in your child’s reading growth. Thanks for your help!
• Homework is always due on Fridays.
• If your child brings home any uncompleted work please review and
complete the work with your child.
Independent Learners
One of the primary goals for first grade is to develop independent
learners. As a responsible first grader your child will be learning
many lifeskills to promote learning independence.
Please ask your child each day to share their learning at home.
 What did they learn during the day at school?
 What do they want to learn?
 What is something they are struggling to learn?
Just Right Books
• In first grade we read “just right books”. These are books
that are at our independent reading level.
• When reading in their book boxes the children are challenged
to read text that is at an appropriate difficulty level.
• Please ask your child to share how they select a “just right
book”.
• You can also create a Reading Treasure Chest (book box) at
home for your child to place the many decodable books they
will bring home on a frequent basis.
Keeping Informed
• Every Friday your child will bring home a first grade
newsletter.
• Please be sure to check out our classroom web pages too. We
love to blog!
• Anytime you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate
to contact us via e-mail or phone.
Learning Environment
Our classrooms are active environments where all
students are expected to engage in learning.
We provide frequent transitions for students to
increase the level of focused learning.
Many Questions
•First graders are naturally inquisitive and interested in
everything.
•We promote higher-level thinking skills by asking students lots
of questions to explain their thinking while learning.
•Students are continually asked to apply their learning when
given new learning tasks leading to increased skills.
Notes
•
Please send any notes to school with your child in their Take Me
Home, Bring Me Back Tomorrow Folder.
•
We always check folders upon arrival and will then be able to
send any bus notes, lunch money and PTA notes to the office.
•
During the busy school day we have limited time to respond to
phone calls so notes are very helpful in communicating between
home and school.
Other Items
Birthdays:
• If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school
please deliver treats to the school office no later than 2PM.
• ALL treats must be store bought as we cannot distribute
homemade treats.
• Please e-mail and let your child’s teacher know if you are
planning to bring treats. We can then let you know how many
students we currently have in our class.
Practice
First graders need a lot of practice to master the many
reading skills and strategies.
•
It is most helpful if you encourage your child to read with and to
you on a daily basis. Decodable stories will come home on a
frequent basis to provide reading practice material.
•
Reading and rereading text increases fluency which is a critical
component of comprehension.
Questions
• We are always available to answer any questions
you may have regarding your child and first grade.
• Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s
teacher via e-mail or phone at anytime.
Report Cards
•
Report cards are standards based in first grade based on the
CCSS and GLEs. Students do not receive letter grades in first
grade as grades are based on a 4 point rubric.
•
Report cards will be distributed each trimester.
•
At the end of first trimester we will be scheduling parentteacher conferences. We look forward to meeting with you
during conferences!
Sounding Out Words
In first grade students will learn an immense amount of new
letter sound spellings. As students learn more and more new
sounds they will try out these new sounds when encountering
new words.
We encourage each child to make an attempt to sound out any
unknown word. With continued practice and application of their
blending skills the students will develop a much stronger lettersound knowledge base leading to more fluent reading.
Testing
Assessments are frequent and on-going in first grade. We
utilize information from formative assessments to plan for
instruction on a daily basis.
• Spelling test-every Friday
• Fluency Checks
• Reading End of Unit Test-each unit
• Math End of Unit Test-each unit
• MAP
Units of Study
• Reading-Unit R, Units 1-5
• Math-Units 1-15
• Foss-3 Kits
Volunteers
We love volunteers in first grade!
• Please check with your child’s teacher if you are
interested in volunteering at school.
• All volunteers must complete paperwork in the
office and be fingerprinted.
Thanks for your help!
