Why does it all matter?
Context for the Economic Case
The population’s median age is around 38 years, up from
32.1 years in 1990
The number of people aged 65 and over has increased
from 11.6 per cent of the population (or 2.1 million people)
in 1993 to 14.4 per cent (or 3.3 million people) in 2013.
The workforce aged over 45 is now around 31% and those
under 25 only 17%.
The population aged 75 or more years is expected to rise
by 4 million from 2012 to 2060, increasing from about 6.4 to
14.4 per cent of the population.
