Evidence Based Medicine
Training the Trainers Across the Healthcare Sector

This project aims to develop a European Qualification
in Teaching Evidence Based Medicine that will
improve transparency across the European healthcare
sector through the design, development, promotion and
piloting of a European training programme specifically for
the training of healthcare trainers in EBM. This follows
the success of our previous project where a critical
appraisal skills programme was provided for postgraduate doctors, consisting of one-day workshops in
teaching the principles of EBM and critical appraisal
skills.
Evidence Based Medicine
Training the Trainers Across the Healthcare Sector

The development of a Training the Trainers programme will help
provide a European qualification which will enable the trainers to fit
more easily into the healthcare system of other EU states and will
improve the efficiency and speed of EBM accreditation, providing a
quality provision, effective work practice and improved patient care again to be put into use.
In addition to the development of a European qualification in
teaching EBM, the project will identify, collate and disseminate
information on existing Training the Trainer courses in partner
countries, their training needs, practices, skills and contacts through
a network of influential healthcare, academic, social and
governmental organisations, facilitating the integration of doctors of
all ages and backgrounds into the larger European employment
market.
Why?

Teaching and training of EBM to the
trainees is patchy and fragmented

Clinically integrated teaching of EBM is
more likely to bring about changes in
skills, attitudes, and behavior.
Objectives

To remove the myth that EBM is an academic
and statistical exercise

To provide practical tips for teaching the
minimum skills required to ask questions,
identify and appraise the evidence critically.

To teach EBM in a clinical setting in a stepwise
manner within the existing educational and
training infrastructure.

What is the end product?



The project will develop an
appropriate course, piloting it
with 50 trainers from across
Europe (UK, NL, PL, HU, DE).

It will become an common
curriculum and ultimately a
common qualification.

It will provide a reference point
which will create an
improvement in the quality and
effectiveness of EBM trainer
education.

It will improve transparency
and health outcomes across
the sector
It will be addressed and
evaluated by independent
experts and partner
organisations.
The course will be accessible
via the internet.
Valorisation strategy

Recommendations from ECOTEC
A
specific overall valorisation strategy is required e.g.
a proper focus on the right target audiences and that
appropriate dissemination methods are in place what is the plan intended to achieve e.g. to achieve a
European wide accreditation
Plan in original application
The valorisation plan is an on-going
activity with involvement from all of the
partners.
 It will be continuously monitored to ensure
maximum publicity and exploitation of the
project’s results to all relevant audiences
at local, National and European level.

Dissemination Activities





A database of relevant audiences including EBM
experts, teaching organisations at regional, national and
European Level will compiled and information regarding
the project and promotion of the project website will be
sent to them via mailing lists
Marketing materials containing the website address will
be designed and distributed to relevant audiences
Website with discussion portal and address distributed
with the survey
Interim and final evaluation reports will be distributed via
the website for public consultation

Benefits from multi-national
Partnerships


Provides an insight into health care systems
other than that in the UK where the target
groups are different, their educational tools
different and the outcomes different
The teaching modules benefit from the
increased knowledge of the issues and practices
of seven countries healthcare systems
Benefits from multi-national
Partnerships

the project results will encourage an EBM
network for standardisation across the EU,
as training in EBM is currently totally
unstructured
Factors to be aware of

People teach and learn differently
depending upon their culture and
educational background
Potential Risks and Tips to
Overcome Them
The University minimised the risks by, first,
working with partners who it has linked
with before and whom were already
participating together in a Leonardo 05-07
initiative
 Ensure that all partners agree on the initial
proposal

Potential Risks and Tips to
Overcome Them
The overseeing of the initiative by the
independent Steering Group made up of
representatives from a range of Member
States has proven to be a successful part
of the current work.
 Regular discussions and updates via email
and telephone conferences is essential
