Population = 3,904,532 (ABS, census 2006)

Queenslanders born overseas
= 24.8% of total Qld population
Indigenous population of Queensland
=127,578 (3.3% of total Qld population)
Smallest proportion of the population that
lives in the capital city (mainland states)
= 45.7% vs 63.8%
Literacy
Almost half of Australians aged
15-74 (7 million people)
have 'poor' or 'very poor' prose
literacy skills
What are libraries doing?
Our Mission
“Creatively linking Queenslanders to information,
knowledge and each other”
• Annual budget = $55.82m in 2008-09
• Primary collector of Queensland’s documentary heritage
• Major reference and research library with over 3.5 million items
valued at over $79 million
• Financial supporter, advocate and partner with local government
in the provision of over 340 public libraries
• 1.57m visitors in 2008-09 (up from 165,000 in 2004-05)
• 2,600 daily visitors to the website Nov 08 (up from 1,000 Jan 06)
