A medical e-learning development training program for healthcare professionals Daniel KuoHung Huang Dept. of E-learning Design and Management National Chiayi University, Taiwan Outlines • Introduction to Chiayi University • Medical e-learning Development Training • Global Co-operation Introduction to Chiayi University • • • • • Chiayi University is in southern Taiwan 7 colleges 13,000 full-time students (Bachelor to Doctor) 500 full-time teachers Dept. of E-learning Design and Management – 9 full-time teachers – All with educational experiences oversea – Research active internationally Medical E-learning Development Training: Background • E-learning Development Team • Train the doctors/nurses to be Instruction Design Subject Matter Expert Media Designer Instruction Designer Medical E-learning Development Training: Procedure • NSF supported, Collaborated with Dalin TzuChi Hospital • Public announcement and recruitment • About 100 applicants, 50 selected, 23 completed • Two phases: 120 hours of classes on weekends, 160 hours of practices in hospitals • 8-month training To facilitate healthcare communication between the medical staff and patients, a scientific communication project funded by Taiwanese government was initiated in 2008 to train the healthcare professionals to develop elearning materials for patients. The curriculum, arranged as workshops on weekends, included media design, e-learning design models, and medical e-learning application in hospitals. Being periodically presented and examined by doctors and media experts during the implementation process, these e-learning systems eventually completed with good quality. At the final stage, these systems were played on a big screen in a hospital. Patients who waited for examination were invited to watch the systems and provide feedbacks. In the end, 28 trainees completed the training. Recruitment Selection Training Courses Project Development Presentation Certificate Awarding End of Program More than 90 applicants all over the nation applied for this 8-month training program. The program consisted of 5-month curriculum and 3-month hand-on project. Only 34 were selected into the program. After the curriculum, trainees selected a practice hospital and developed the e-learning materials under the supervision of the hospital elearning department staff. Four to five persons formed a group and chose a health education theme for elearning implementation. They cooperated with experts to develop medical contents with appropriate knowledge and pedagogy. These trainees made poster presentations in groups at a medical e-learning conference.
