• On your paper, brainstorm a list of words or

• You should refer to the poem and lyrics
• Be prepared to share!
Small Group TPCASTT
• You will be placed in a group and given the
poem “America” (pg 33) or the poem “Shine,
Perishing Republic” (pg 34).
• Your group will complete a TPCASTT analysis
of your poem.
• You need to be able to read and explain the
meaning of your poem to the rest of the class.
Class Discussion
• How does each speaker feel about America?
• How are these feelings similar and/or different?
• Writing Prompt : (Put in Quickwrite section) about a
page in length
• Title: America the Beautiful
• Choose which speaker and tone in the poems most
closely resembles your attitude toward America and
discuss why. Describe how personal experiences align
you with this attitude and any small differences in your
viewpoints.
America’s Voices
• In your assigned groups, read aloud, analyze, and
discuss “I Hear America Singing,” “I, Too, Sing
America,” and “Indian Singing in TwentiethCentury America.”
• Fill in the chart on page 35 together.
• Finally, you will be assigned one of the poems to
perform. You will need to evoke the emotion
through gestures, facial expression, and voice
inflection.
