Service Learning Guidelines for students:

Service learning is more than a chance to volunteer, it is an opportunity to increase your personal and social responsibility, service learning will help you build connections to your community and raise your social awareness. Look at service learning as a way to not only build your resume but to strengthen your character and your self-esteem. With this in mind, it is necessary for you follow certain guidelines and complete all necessary paperwork. Time management: Punctuality matters! Please arrive on time and complete your entire shift. If your are sick or cannot make your commitment, call your supersvisor immediately. Dress code: Cover the 3B’s! Each organization will have a more specific dress code, so check their website. Howerver, you must always be neat and clean, no worn or torn clothing, no tank tops, always wear closed-toed shoes, cover any tattoos and keep a smile on your face. Self-Awareness: Always remember that you represent Crafton Hills College. If your are working with children, you must never touch them or be alone with them. Never offer a stranger a ride or give them any money. Always maintain a professional relationship with your supervisors, colleagues and community members. Responsibility: Remember your time log! It is your responsibility to keep track of your hours as you will turn it in at the end of the service. Bring it with you each and every time. Compassion: Do not judge! You are volunteering to help others, many of whom are in need. Please do not talk down to them or criticize them. Do not pry into their backgrounds or try to “save” them. Follow the protocol of your organization and helpyour community through the proper channels. If you have any questions or concerns about this information please contact either me or your instructor immediately. I can be reached @ [email protected]

It creates the avenue for more active learning and social engagement. It increases students’ awareness of current social, political, historical or economic issues. It broadens their horizons for more academic and professional areas of interests. Service Learning develops interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, and civic responsibility through active community involvement. Service Learning can be assigned and graded in many ways depending on course and instructor. Students can be assigned a total number of hours, a certain location or a specific activity in order to supplement their curriculum and to benefit their community. After being assigned Service Learning hours, students can be graded many different ways, and through different types of assignments. Extra Credit: This is often the easiest and simplest way to implement Service Learning. Have students participate in a specific event that is relevant to the subject matter at hand, or by organizing a supply drive for a relevant organization in need. This is easy to grade, students participated or not. Essay: Students can write a 3-5 page essay that explores their organizations values, objectives and how they helped in this community. Research paper: Students can do in depth research on the organization where they volunteered to understand a more historical background or the foundation of the organization. Students could investigate the “cause” they worked for to understand the underlying social, political, or economic conditions in their community. Reflection: Students can take a moment to reflect on their experience. As an in class assignment, students can ponder the “who, what, where, how and why” of their experience and develop an understanding of how this involvement affected them. Presentations: Working individually or in small groups, students can show pictures and explain exactly what they did and how they helped their community. Service Learning is not intended to create more work for the instructor but rather as a means to supplement instruction and create the opportunity for learning outside of the classroom.
