Practice Religion “Religiously!”
The word "religiously" is often used in a non-religious context.
It means "with extreme conscientiousness; `he came to work religiously
every morning at 8 o'clock'." That phrase does not indicate the person was in prayer on his way
to work or thinking spiritual thoughts. It has nothing to do with piety or sacred activity. It means
the person observed the ritual with scrupulous and meticulous care.
There are some folks who do nearly everything "religiously." Some people play golf
religiously. Some people read the newspaper religiously. Some people walk, run, or follow some
other exercise routine religiously.
While listening to sports talk radio (which I do religiously) I have often heard the expression
that "Football is a religion in the South." Southern football fans are zealously devoted to their
teams. They wear clothing emblazoned with their team's name and colors, wave flags, and drive
vehicles covered with paraphernalia showing their support.
My point for today is this – don't you reckon that religion should be practiced
religiously? Isn't that how / why the expression developed? In Deut. 32:46 the Lord warned
Israel to observe the Law "religiously" saying, ""Take to your heart all the words with which I am
warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe carefully (conscientiously,
scrupulously), even all the words of this law.”
Yep, seems to me if there's anything that should be practiced "religiously" it is our
religion! Should we not: Read the Holy Scriptures religiously? Pray religiously? Assemble
with the saints religiously? Obey the commands of Christ religiously?
Today's Prayer: "Father, let zeal for Your house consume me. Fill me with Your Spirit. Let
not my desire to worship and honor and obey You be quenched until I am in Your glorious
presence. May Your judgment be that I practice my religion religiously!"
