Families on the Periodic Table
 Elements are grouped into families bases on their
chemical properties.
 Each family has a specific name
 Elements in each family
react differently with
other elements of other
families.
ALKALI METALS
Group 1 or IA
 Starts with lithium not
hydrogen
 All metals
 Soft and silvery metals
 Very reactive, esp. with water
 Conduct electricity
 1 electron in the last orbit

ALKALINE EARTH METALS
Group 2 or IIA
 Starts with Berelium
 All metals
 White and
malleable(stretched
or bent)
 Reactive, but less
than Alkali metals
 Conduct electricity
 2 electrons in last
orbit
TRANSITION METALS
Groups IB-VIIIB or 3-12
 Good conductors of




heat and electricity.
All metals
Used to make things,
specially jewellery.
Forms bright colored
solutions
VIII B is split into
three groups.
BORON FAMILY
Group 3 or IIIA
 Starts with Boron.
 Boron is a
metalloid
 Rest of them are
metals.
 3 electrons in last
orbit
CARBON FAMILY
Group 4 or IVA
 Starts with carbon
which is non metal.
 Followed with Si
and Ge which are
metalloids
 Ends with metals
Tin and Lead.
 4 electrons in the
last orbit
NITROGEN FAMILY
Group 5 or VA
 Starts with Nitrogennonmetals
 Followed by
Aresenic-metalloid
 Ends with Bismuthmetals
 5 electrons in the last
orbit
OXYGEN FAMILY
Group 6 or VIA
 Starts with Oxygennonmetal
 Teluriummetalloid
 Ends with metal
 6 electrons in the
last orbit
Halogens
Group 7 or VIIA
 Starts with
Hydrgen
 All are non-metals
 Very reactive
elements
 Quickly forms
bonds with Group
1 elements
 7 electrons in the
outer shell
Noble Gases
Group 8 or VIIIA
 Exist as gases
 Non-metals
 8 electrons in the
outer shell = Full
 Helium (He) has only
2 electrons in the
outer shell = Full
 Not reactive with
other elements
PERIODS
 There are 1-7 periods
 Period 6 and 7 are
split into:
 Lanthanide series
 Actinide series
Rare Earth Metals
 Some are
Radioactive
 The rare
earths are
silver, silverywhite, or gray
metals.
 Conduct
electricity
For class – write at least 2 elements per group
Rest finish for HW
