“The good teacher makes
the poor student good and
the good student superior”
M.Collins
The
character of
groups
• Different
teachers may
evoke a
markedly
different
response from
the same group
Changes in
class mood
Similarities
of people in
a group
• Students
respond to the
way you
respond to
them.
• The one thing
that everyone
has in common
is that they are
in a languagelearning class
There will be significant differences between people;
it's not only age or level that differs in learners they may also have
Individual differences
Learners may have different...
Motivation
The strength of their motivation will be a
factor in determining how seriously they
approach the work, how much time they
set aside for it, how hard they push
themselves, etc.
Multiple intelligences
Howard Gardener has suggested that people could
have seven 'intelligences' (maybemore!):
linguistic
logical/mathe
matical
visual
musical
bodily/feeling
interpersonal
(contact with
other people)
intrapcrsonal
(understandin
g oneself)

Mixed-level classes
What is a learner's level?
Teachers often come out of class complaining that
the students seem to be very mixed in level. The
most common reasons are:
Grouping
by age
Placement
testing
Keeping
groups
together
Insufficient
levels
Learners and their needs
Needs analysis
Writing
The learners are asked to:
fill in a questionnaire;
choose the best answer from a selection;
gap-fill (or complete) sentences;
take a language test;
tick the picture/diagrams that represent their
use of English;
write a paragraph about topics set by teacher;
write a letter/an e-mail/a note to your teacher;
write a homework essay about what you want
to learn and why.
You can:
Speaking
interview learners individually or in pairs;
plan activities to focus learners on specific
issues, leading to discussion;
ask learners to select (and reject) items from
a menu or a set of cards, discussing their
reasons with each other;
ask informally for advice about what would be
useful to work on next lesson;
collect oral (or written) feedback comments;
ask learners to describe/draw/make a model
of their workplace or a diagram of their
company structure, etc.
Observation
Set the students tasks to do in
class.
If you have a one-to-one
student, it may be possible to
observe him at his workplace.
Ask each learner to bring in
samples of material they work
with.
Text
Listen to the following conversation.
Travel Agent: Good morning. Can I help You?
Sue: Good morning. It's really hot out there. Eh.. I'd like to go to
England for about a fortnight.
T.A.: Which part of England would you like to visit? S: Well, I'm not
sure.. Can you suggest some places?
T.A.: If you like to go to hill resorts, I suggest the Lake District. It
is a attractive hilly area with beautiful lakes. For a seaside resort,
Torquay is a popular one. S: I'd like to visit historic spots, too.
T.A.: In that case, Bath would be a fine place. It still preserves the
health centre built by the Romans.
