Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil.
About 1% of U.S. landfill space is full of disposable
diapers, which take 500 years to decompose.
Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate
a TV set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a can of
gasoline.
Glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw
materials reduces related air pollution by 20%, and water
pollution by 50%.
Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually -consuming more than 850 million trees.
Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per
acre than farmers.
Mission Statement


the environment by encouraging all employees
and guests to embrace sustainability.

By turning down your central heating thermostat one degree, fuel
consumption is cut by as much as 10%.
Insulating your attic reduces the amount of energy loss in most houses
by up to 20%.
Enough glass was thrown away in 1990 to fill the former Twin Towers
(1,350 feet high) of New York's World Trade Center every two weeks.
One ton of carbon dioxide that is released in the air can be prevented by
replacing every 75 watt light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs.
Many banks lent large sums of money to developing nations. In order
to pay those debts plus interest many nations have turned to the mining
of their natural resources as a source of financial aid.
Every day 40,000 children die from preventable diseases.

The following information/examples provided
to you are a result of a 14 month effort by the
management/ staff at TPC Sawgrass
The information is broken down by department
to help facilitate a better understanding of the
many opportunities available to each club
regarding environmental sensitivity and
partnership

Implementation of Integrated Pest Management System
Audubon Certification and Recertification- Next Recertification in 2009
Planted over 25,000 new shrubs, groundcover and perennials that have been
planted on the golf courses, clubhouse and entry drives-This is equivalent to
250,000 KG/YR in Co2 Savings and 551,150 LBS/YR in CO2 Emissions
Savings
Planted nearly 1,000 new trees between the two golf courses, the entry drive and
clubhouse grounds- drives-This is equivalent to 20,300 KG/YR in Co2 Savings
and 44,753.38 LBS/YR in CO2 Emissions Savings
The Department of Agriculture inspects our chemical storage and procedures
annually
“Spoon feed” nutrients through the irrigation system as needed to avoid waste
Saved nearly 100 trees and transplanted them to new locations including 12 large
live oaks (40,000 lbs/tree)
Saved and transplanted a 19 inch diameter live oak that weighed 80,000 lbs
150 gallons of solvent and 400 gallons of oil are refined and recycled by SafetyKleen annually


Vegetative Debris Management- On 230 acres of turf, grass clippings are
mulched, and on 20 acres turf clippings are disbursed into the woods. No
waste is created- it all goes back into the environment
Renovated 1.5 linear miles of lake bank that has been planted in native
vegetation
Installed over 1 mile of bulk heads to greatly reduce the amount of sediment
run off into the lakes
Cleaner/ degreaser for all Golf Course Maintenance equipment is made with
“Biodegradable Detergents”- we use 55 gallons annually
Limited water usage- only using water from the Aquifer when necessaryWater usage was reduced 87% over last year
Pesticide/Herbicide/Insecticide Review- five people are pesticide licensed
Changed out on-course bathrooms to eco-friendly products
On course bathrooms have motion sensors on the lights to prevent wasting
electricity
St John’s County Health Inspector inspects our storage tanks annually
Gas storage tanks are kept above ground to prevent ground contamination

TPC SAWGRASS Green Initiative Committee was formed in May 2007and meets on a
monthly basis
We are recycling paper that is put into the shredder
We are recycling cardboard through Waste Management
Using a “State of the Art” Energy/Lighting system to minimize electrical consumption
Changed out all table and floor lamps to florescent bulbs to conserve energy- This will cost
us $1352 less per year and save us 9200 kWh of Life Cycle Energy and will reduce Life
Cycle Air Pollution by 14,122 lbs of CO2
Florescent bulbs are recycled by Safety Kleen
Toner and Ink cartridges are recycled
Copy paper used is 10% post consumer recycled paper
Water Consumption- All fixtures are low volume
Continually researching new recycled products for use whenever possible
Changed hand soap throughout the clubhouse to “green certified” hand soap
Switched to recycled C-fold towels
Jani King switching to Eco Friendly/Bio-degradable Cleaning Solutions
No longer print employee newsletters- all info goes on the employee website instead

Implemented a Grease recycle program through Griffins Industries
Solid Waste Reduction- Grease traps and sand separator are pumped quarterly
Have changed coffee cups to 10% recycled paper
Completely eliminated Styrofoam, using corn based cups instead
Using sugarcane to-go boxes and plates
We currently offer eco-friendly wine by Benzinger
Ecolab has been contacted and we have switched to all eco-friendly products that
they supply

gallons per minute vs. old system used 14 gallons per minute
All cleaning products for cart washing used are eco-friendly
Internally using recycled paper for scrap paper
Using towels instead of paper products to clean
Breaking down cardboard and recycling it through Waste Management
Use eco-friendly bags for merchandise
Recycling Plastic/Aluminum/Paper- New receptacles from Prestwick have been put
on the golf courses for recycling these items
Internally Recycle bubble wrap
We added a green friendly hat from Imperial to the golf shop- sold 96 units in 2
weeks

The public transportation that we have is a wreck. The U.S.
continues to promote and invest in private car travel rather
than public transportation.
The human population of the world is expected to be nearly
tripled by the year 2100.
A three percent annual growth rate will result in the
doubling of consumption and production of food and other
products in 25 short years. The amount of motor vehicles
that are expected to be operated will increase 15 million a
year until at least 2020.
The world's per capita grain production has been on the
downfall since 1985 despite the use of fertilizers and
pesticides.

Already a train system has been developed (back in 1987)
which is based on magnetic levitation and causes minimal
pollution. These versions of a train are already in use in
several countries.
Fiber optics, made of glass, are being used to replace
copper cables throughout the world.
The uncontrolled fishing that is allowed has reduced the
amount of commercial species. Some species, up to onetenth of their original population.
Every day 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become
extinct as their habitat and human influences destroy them
