ASHRAE Technical Committees Background of Technical Committees (TCs) • 3,553 TC volunteers – 572 volunteers outside of North America • 70% of Technical Program at 2013 Annual Conference sponsored by TCs • Over 200 Handbook chapters maintained by TCs • All 63 active research projects monitored by TCs • Technical Activities Committee coordinates membership, development, oversight Four Types of Committees • Task Groups (TGs): formed when a new technical area develops that is relevant to ASHRAE • Technical Committees (TCs): longstanding group of volunteers who provide expertise in a specific field or subject • Technical Resource Groups (TRGs): formed with a specific concern in mind. • Multidisciplinary Task Groups (MTGs): formed when need for activity in a field of interest that encompasses the expertise of TCs from two or more sections and/or from non-TC groups, such as standards committees Technical Subcommittees • Research – Identify needed research – Develop research work statements – Evaluate proposals – Monitor research projects – Ensure results are disseminated • Standards – TCs provide liaisons to standards committees – TCs may be asked to provide concurrence with non-ASHRAE standards (such as those developed by ASTM or International Standards Organization) Technical Subcommittees (cont’d.) • Handbook: Committees assigned chapters consistent with their expertise/scope • Programs – Committees can submit topics and program proposals for presentation – Organize Technical Paper and Conference Paper Sessions – Partner with other TCs on developing papers and programs Technical Committees Sections • Fundamentals and General • Environmental Quality • Materials and Processes • Load Calculations and Energy Requirements • Ventilation and Air Distribution • Heating Equipment, Heating and Cooling Systems and Applications • Building Performance • Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration System Components • Building Applications • Refrigeration Systems Get Involved!
