An Orphan’s Diary

Wednesday 12 th of January 1951 Hello my name is Orla Mac Laddy. I am an orphan in St.Clare’s Harold’s Cross. My mother died and my father asked the good sisters to take me in. He helps out whenever he can and takes me home for visits sometimes.

I get up at 6: 30 a. m. and dress before Morning Prayer in our Lady’s dormitory then go to mass. At breakfast I have porridge and a cup of tea or milk am old enough to help with the washing, sweeping and dusting but the younger girls go back to the dorm. After washing our hair and combing our hair I put on my school uniform –It’s a navy dress with pleated skirt and white collar. At 9am I cross the yard to San Damiano where I go to school. I learn History, Irish, English, Maths, Music, Sewing and Knitting. A nun comes over from the convent to tech us Religion.

We go to the dining hall for lunch. After school we have free time to play. Then I do my homework. Today is Wednesday so I have Irish dancing.

St Clare’s Lollipop Lady

The lollipop lady helps us to cross the road. Her name is Rita. She is always smiling. She stops the traffic so we can get to the other side of the road. The rules of the road say that you should look left and right then left again when crossing the road. The school gates are closed with a buzzer. The school gates open for the cars and the children.I feel safe when the lollipop lady helps me cross the road. We went to traffic school to learn the rules of the road.

St Clare’s Survey on traveling to school

We have a walk to school week each year. The car’s fumes is bad for the environment. Walking is also good exercise. Some people in other classes use a scooter. They must wear a helmet. We went to the traffic school this year and learned the rules of the road.
