MAP Academic Assignment
What is the reason for doing the Academic
Assignment?
• The aim of the Academic Assignment is to focus
on a subject that you are currently studying and
to further develop your knowledge and skills in
this area.
• The assignment is an important part of your
Portfolio of Evidence and will be used to
demonstrate to an Admissions Tutor that you
have the potential to be a successful student on
a particular degree course.
Choosing your subject area
You will choose your assignment subject
area today. This will be one of the subjects
you are currently studying.
Examples:
You are studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths and are interested in
applying to Medicine. You could choose to do your assignment in
Biology or Chemistry as these will be most relevant to your course.
You are studying English, History and Physics but want to study Law at
University. You should do your assignment in either English or History
as these will demonstrate many of the skills needed for Law.
How is the assignment structured?
• Based on the subject you want to complete your
assignment in you will be allocated an Academic
Tutor
• The Academic Tutor will be member of University
teaching staff or a postgraduate student
• 2 meetings (beginning and half way)
• The assignment is a 1500 word piece of
academic research

Level Description
5
Target fully met or student has surpassed target.
4
Target nearly met. The student has made good progress
towards the target but has not fully developed the knowledge /
skills to meet this target completely.
3
Student has made some progress towards target but has left out
important elements. The student may have a superficial grasp of
what they have been asked to demonstrate but has been unable
to take this further.
2
A little progress has been made but the student has significantly
not produced enough evidence of their ability to meet a
particular learning outcome. This may be through lack of
understanding or a lack of commitment to completing the
outcome successfully.
1
The student has provided no evidence at all of their ability to
meet a learning outcome.

Manchester Access
Programme
Student-University Contract
As a Manchester Access Programme student
I agree to:
• Attend all compulsory activities punctually
• Where I am unable to attend for a genuine reason I will inform
the MAP Team (or my Academic Tutor where appropriate)
• Perform to the best of my ability to successfully complete each of
the activities
• Respect any guidelines given by the University relating to
behaviour and conduct when taking part in MAP activities
Academic Assignment
• Meet all deadlines set by the University
• Not plagiarise or pass anyone else’s work off as your own
As a Manchester Access Programme student
I understand that:
• To benefit from the MAP admissions processes I will need to
complete all compulsory parts of the programme successfully.
• The University will provide guidance on the degree course that best
suits my ability, experience and qualifications
• I am not guaranteed to get on to a particular degree course simply
because that is the course I would like to follow. Rather, my
predicted performance in examinations at my school/college and
other aspects of the UCAS form will be taken into account
alongside performance on the MAP programme.
For each MAP student
The University of Manchester will:
• provide a clear timetable of activities
• provide clear guidelines on what you will
need to do to pass each of the compulsory
activities
• Provide support to facilitate success on
the programme and in accessing the most
appropriate course at The University of
Manchester
For each student that successfully completes the
Manchester Access Programme the University will:
• Consider my application to the University based on:
– my prior achievement and predicted academic
performance from school/college
– the information I provide in my university application form
e.g. personal statement
– My participation in and my performance on The
Manchester Programme
The evidence from these sources will be needed to
satisfy the entry requirements for a particular course.
If you meet these requirements you will either be made an
offer or will be invited to interview.
Successful completion of the
programme will mean
• If you are made an offer from the
University, we will take into account the 40
UCAS points MAP is worth:
• E.g. an entry requirement of AAB would become
BBB
• An email of recommendation will be sent
on my behalf should I wish to apply to
other universities
